pegasus216 the apple dumplings are delicious! i had four! still smacking my lips. cup of coffee with it. excellent. and the apple sauce is good. i'm ladling it into containers--we had to get more containers from the dollar store as we were running short and that's a good sign, over 80 containers (bottle of various sizes) of pickles and salsa and i don't know how many apple sauce. as i'm ladling the sauce into containers my wife asks me how's it taste? you know, with that tone of voice that implies all manner of harm? i'd only wiped up a spill with my thumb and ate that. good, i says. containers say they are 3.2 cups. got four of them from what i think is a 9-quart crock pot. big oval thing? you get about half of what starts out as a full crock pot. anyway, my wife says she put some allspice into the sauce by mistake, said good thing it was a spice that could go in there...she thought she was reaching for the apple pie spice. 'bout done for the year then, garden is long done save for carrots still in the ground, apple trees 'bout done, winter coming, we're stocked up, just need to harvest some venison, make jam in another month or so...sooner if i harvest some venison soon. onward and upward. :)

Scrubbed the woodwork inside and outside the front windows, polished the windows, and straightened up the front porch. I wanted to have my Halloween decorations up at least a week ahead of time. Some people leave theirs up all month, but due to things I'm still working on it. The previous two days I did outdoor jobs, mostly preparation to paint and painting. Today I spent the remaining time on my rose arch. It looks the best I can possibly make it given what I have to work with. It actually needs a real trellis, but until such time as I can acquire one at least the roses will be being trained into as nice an arch as possible.

Today Mom and I voted and I hand delivered the ballots to the courthouse to do my utmost to prevent any funny business.

I hope Walt does not mind me jumping in to answer for him :umm::fingers:

Have you heard of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan?

Andy and I passed through there on the way back from the King Kon 2014 in Ohio

The folks up there called themselves "Yoopers"

I bought the t-shirt :my_bad::lol:

Thanks, Neesy. I was just curious. I am familiar with the U.P. and actually wanted to visit a resort near there but had to cross it off my route. Time slipped away from me.
Did you and Andy think it resembled Maine at all?

It IS awesome up there. Spent many a fall vacation in a cabin up there when I was a kid. Good memories. Never saw Oompapa Walt, though.

Hope to make it there in two years time, for sure (one way or another!) :big_smile:

Doc Creed, yeah, what Neesy said, from the u.p. or da u.p. an area also known as the keweenaw which is also the northernmost peninsula if one excludes any peninsulas on isle royale. from what i know of maine, the two regions look alike. a bit of strange: the pic fljoe0 posted, the pock-a-dot house? with the slate siding? that house looks like many in this area, many old mining houses many a hundred years old or so, finnish, french, and slavic ghettos. the area is/was also known as "the copper country" and at one time for many years the area produced a lot of copper. copper from the region, amazingly, has been traced to other places, other ancient times. we think we're wired-in now, with the net...but way back whenever, thousands of years ago, people were wired (after a fashion).

ummm, houses with no dots, though. would be fun to play twister on that one...remember the count? exiting the castle? yeah, like that.

Thanks, Walt (your name makes me think of Walter White and Walt Longmire)
I bet it is beautiful up there. The closest I've come to seeing Michigan is Minnesota and Wisconsin. Maine, too, if you say they're similar. In Alabama we don't see spruce trees, douglas firs, birches, and other trees of the north country. A completely different smell and appearance. I could kick myself for not taking more pics on vacation. If you get a chance take a pic of the tree that you sit in all the time. (I'm guessing you actually do this and it's not a metaphor, lol). Thanks for your reply.

not much of a picture Doc Creed and i didn't realize when i set up the game camera i'd be game but it worked out that way. there are two large hemlocks growing almost side by side, another that has long fallen (almost) and is the dead-fall you see leaning. there's a yellow birch foremost in the photo the left, there are maple and oak around the stand. the woods look much like this now, quite a few of the leaves have fallen although a day ago the bush was still thick with leaves. my avatar is another the game camera caught.

What a great picture; the perfect place to be alone with one's thoughts. I've never been hunting but it is something I really want to do. I'd love to have my own land in Montana and create a homestead. Incidentally, have you read Jim Harrison? I'm a fan of his books. He writes about Montana and Michigan. I think you'd really like his writing. The Brown Dog novellas are a personal favorite.
