Hi.

I read a news article (and watched the video) about a teen girl brutally beaten by four other teen girls at a Mc Donald's. A group of other teens were gather around watching.

Apparently, there were adults in the peripheral who witnessed the attack.

A number of people, including the Mc Donald's employees, called 9-1-1.

Some reporters asked why no one stepped in. (Sorry. Some teens did step in.)

What do you think you would do?

I appreciate your replies.

Peace.

I was at a Greyhound bus stop in a small town in Montana (it was the same town that Matthew Shepard was murdered in, but that happened years after this event) when our bus driver got beat up by one of the passengers inside the bus depot. It took a good two minutes before anyone stepped in to stop it. I weighed all of 135 lbs. back then so I really wasn't about to end it. But, there were full grown burly-type men just standing there watching it happen. I wanted to start yelling at them- 'Why aren't you guys stopping him??' I guess people just don't want to get involved anymore....

I'm glad you didn't step in. Wild West mentality scares the crap out of me.

Thank you, sir.

It just may be that people don't want to get involved anymore.

The guy had been drinking from a brown paper bag and another rider alerted the driver. This happened at 3 o'clock in the morning with the wind and snow blowing around like crazy outside. The cops did finally show up and took the driver to the nearest hospital. He made them bring him back to the bus (while we were waiting for another driver to arrive, which took 3 hours) to let us all know he was somewhat okay- had a cracked bone in his arm, a wrenched neck and a concussion. They did catch the attacker.

I honestly have no idea how I would respond, except I assume I'd be in a kind of shocked state at first. Then when I decided I wanted to do something if I allowed myself to stop and think I'd be likely to doubt what to do or how to do it. I do presume I'd call 911, though.

I'm glad it wasn't worse. Sometimes, we just have to call the police and stand back. I know that sounds harsh, but you put yourself at risk too by stepping in. It takes a collective of people to stand up, strength in numbers. It's a tough call. It would be an incident by incident decision for me whether I stepped in or not. I would always WANT to, but I would be afraid.

I've broken up fights before. The stupidest was between two dogs, and I paid for it. I'm not brave or involved or anything. Quite the opposite. I just can't stand confrontation.
We seem to be very much alike, Grandpa. I too attempted to break up a fight between two dogs and paid for it. I, believe it or not, also hate confrontation.

...I have no respect for bullying or "looky-loos" that seem to feed off the same...I would have waded in and let come what may...4 against one is bullsh*t odds, coward fighting essentially, and I would have tried to break it up, size 14 boot in somebody's ass might get their attention...

Hey, Dana Jean.

I have to agree with you.

I have stepped in to a number of ...altercations/situations but ... I had to measure what kind of possible back up I might expect and just how bad things can get. (And please believe me, things can go from bad to deadly in nanoseconds.)

I would always WANT to intercede but I'm prudent. I'm no good to anyone dead.

I would try to step in. I'm all of 5'2 and 115 pounds soaking wet (now), so I don't know if I'd make much of a difference. But sometimes all it takes is for one person to step in before others will. I'd like to hope that my skinny little self would shame more able-bodied people into getting involved.

If nothing else, I'd whip out my phone, video every single person standing around, and post that bad boy on FB so that they and everyone they know, the whole world, can see what chicken sh*ts they are.

I don't condone violence, but I do love this clip of a bully getting a dose of her own medicine.
A bully picks on a woman on the train, acting all big and bad until somebody bigger and badder stepped in. Then it was a different story.

I broke up a fight between a neighbour's dog and our Samoyed while I was out raking the yard.

I was nine months pregnant. - Sure enough - I went into labour late that night and into the morning! So my son ended up being born on his actual due date of July the 1st (Canada Day).

Same for me, too. I would be too afraid and then on top of that I might not know what to do.
