The way things break in tandem. In the last week, the 'fancy-schmantzy matches the TV' DVD player died, the vacuum cleaner gave up the ghost, and Mark cracked the toilet bowl right at the end of screwing it back down after replacing the seal. None are horribly expensive alone, but it's annoying to have to replace a bunch of basic things at the same time.

People who don't know how to merge onto or get off the freeway! Drives me batsh*t crazy. It is the job of the people coming onto the freeway to be driving the speed of the freeway when they get on. And it is their job to merge, it is not the freeway people's job to slow down to 40 to let them in. NO! This isn't a McDonald's parking lot you are courteously waving someone out in the line of traffic. This is the freeway. Yes, we can adjust one or two miles per hour to allow for a smooth merge, but dropping down many miles per hour is dangerous. And yes, we don't have to be total a-holes, if you can get over to allow the merge traffic free access to the lane, then get over. But, if you don't know the laws of successful merging, get the hell outta my way and stay off the freeway.

whew! rant over. I think I broke a rib.

And to add to Dana Jean-- drivers who are driving in the extreme right lane, and instantaneously decide they want to make a left turn, thus crossing over all lanes. No signals either- just turn that wheel and proceed. (vice versa also applies ).
I'mthisclose to writing an op ed to the paper. I used to do it all the time. I've had quite a little collection of them published.

You should see the culture shock my wife and I experience in Maine in regards to entering a freeway or highway. In Texas, you accelerate. You don't slow down. You don't choke the ramp on because traffic is so heavy it would create an accident. Moreover, if you slow down you will NEVER enter the freeway/highway. In Texas, people move over and let people in. It is just a given, not unlike the common act of veering into the shoulder and slowing down slightly to let someone pass if they can't through the normal channel. In Texas that is no big deal because they have HUGE shoulders which are pretty much another lane.

Here in Maine, people do not accelerate onto the highway or freeway. I can't tell you how many times I've been at a stop or going 5mph on the on ramp. The on ramp yields and for the most part the slow lane does not move over for them. *Some people do, but they are the exceptions. What is weird about this is the fact that Maine has such a light traffic load. It is a given 99.9% of the time that someone could slip over to the fast lane and let people enter without slowing down at all. I suppose the lightness of the traffic make stopping or slowing to a crawl on the on ramp no big thing since an opening will present itself (where in Texas it never would). Even so, it is sort of weird and illogical. :D

By contrast, my wife and I LOVE the big round about on ramps and off ramps that are common (not universal but common). They force people to drive sanely during the Winter months. People who would otherwise be dangerous in icy weather don't end up sliding onto the highway or freeway killing other people, but slide out of control into this big pit in the middle and out of the way. :D

I shake my head every time I have to drive in MA again when someone will pass vehicles to get into the far left lane on the highway before crossing back across 4 lanes of traffic to take the next exit on the right only seconds later. Maybe those people you're seeing are the snowbirds from MA. ;-D
