I just found out...on facebook...that my cousin died last night. I was chatting with him yesterday. The folks who announced it, did not contact the family first. His sister found out by going on FB. This is so improper. I am totally shocked and disgusted that some family members had to find out this way.

First of all, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, Staro. I actually knew someone who learned their father died when their half-sister posted it on Facebook. How terrible! What a cold, heartless way to learn a loved one has died. I agree with you one hundred percent-- it's shocking, disgusting, and totally improper.

@staropeace I'm so sorry for your loss and that you and your family had to hear it like that. That's incredibly improper. I work in a church and often am the first to hear of a death because the family calls the priest - and I have to keep my mouth shut until someone from the family gives me the word to let others know - people need a moment to get their bearings and decide what and how to announce it. Totally tactless to put something like that on facebook.

Thank you all for your kindness. RIP Basil Pretty...you were a character. Basil loved to tell stories...tall and short. He was very artistic and made his living doing fine leather works. He came from a fairly gifted family. Lloyd, his brother, is a well known painter in Canada. I posted some of his paintings here on the board. They both made a very good living from there work. Lloyd's son just had his first novel published.
We were all laughing and joking all week. Telling funny stories and writing poems and sending to each other. Basil lived up here not far from me. Lloyd is in Newfoundland. I do not know yet what the arrangements are going to be. I will let you know. Love you guys.

So very sorry staro.

It is hard to know what to say. I guess when people are all spread out over the country it is hard to keep in touch. I am sorry his own sister found out by going on Facebook.

From what I have seen recently (when my son's GF used our computer to go on FB, (and she is 22) I got the impression there are so many very young people on there with pretty much poor judgement. I think that is what ruins it (well, for me, anyway). It can be a pretty juvenile atmosphere on there.

So sorry to hear this Staro, what a ****ty way to find out. Although, sadly, it doesn't surprise me with facebook. My Mum's friends and their family are all the type of people who would want to be the first to put something like this up on FB because they crave the "likes" and the attention.
Oh man, that's horrible... so sad what we're becoming, isn't it?
