Soul and blues music is my real passion, but I like a bit of just about everything. I'm a music head and always have been. That's one huge thing I credit SKMB for--giving that back to me after a decade long 'mommy coma'. When I started here, John D. was so passionate about music--ALL music, not just the music from when he was young--that he woke me up to life outside the four walls again. Started listening to music again--new music--and that lead to writing again (something I'd given up after college).

SKMB gave me myself back :D

Wow - that is quite profound skimom2, but I do know what you mean.

After Andy's cancer and slow decline (losing weight, unable to speak properly etc.) I was also in a 'different world' but coming here, back in 2012 (after Andy started working up North in Nunavut and was gone from home for months at a time) I found inspiration and a bunch of people, who (like me!) loved to read Stephen King.

It was so fricking great!

Now it is a place I need to come to every day and if I miss a couple of days I feel antsy. (oh oh - I think I have turned into a "Kingaholic")

He is 10 years older than I am, but I wish I had his energy! :biggrin2:
Oh - hang on - what is my favourite music - I think I'll be diplomatic and say what Giant said - pretty much a mixed bag - a bit of this, a bit of that :)

Classic rock, southern rock, some older country, but not a fan of much of anything new. New country is ridiculous, nothing but a joke, and I'm not into rap/pop/hip hop/ heavy metal, or any of that... I DO however like older heavy metal, Judas Priest, etc. Even the oldies I enjoy, like the soundtrack from "Christine" for instance..

I've never really heard the sound track from Christine but I did see the movie on TV - if I recall correctly Bad to the Bone by George Thoroughgood was one of the tracks.

(Saw him in concert here in Winnipeg back in the 90s and he was excellent!)

How about this guy? (has anyone here ever heard him play?):

I would have loved to hear the Rock Bottom Remainders play in their heyday, if indeed they had one.

The dusty and unreliable archives of my memory have me thinking that Mr. King, who played rhythm guitar, thought that Mr. (Dave) Barry, who played lead guitar (these memories are not reliable), was a pretty good guitarist. From that point, I go to another archived memory (i.e., completely unreliable) of Dave Barry, talking about his experience as a guitarist in a local band imaginatively (for then, in the draft period) called the Federal Ducks, saying that he had visions of becoming a rock and roll guitar god, until he saw Jimi Hendrix playing the guitar with his teeth, and realizing that Hendrix could play with his teeth far better than he (Barry) could ever do with his hands.

So none of that really matters to wanting to see Mr. King play guitar (Bruce Springsteen: "Your band's not too bad. It's not too good either. Don't let it get any better; otherwise you'll just be another lousy band."), except that it's not possible anymore, at least in the Rock Bottom Remainders paradigm, and even if they never achieved greatness, it's important to remember that Mr. King notes that even if you're not Steinbeck, it's possible to achieve success with your artistic endeavors.

Or as Mark Twain said, "My books are like water. Those of the great geniuses are wine. But everybody drinks water." I'm sure the Rock Bottom Remainders made plenty of water.

I'm a fan of Progressive rock: Rush, Genesis, Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Renaissance, Kate Bush. I like classical music, too, mostly impressionists and romantics, except for Stravinsky and Mussorgsky.

skimom, I just wanted to say... I know exactly how you feel. Rush did that for me in 2010, almost a year after my Mother died. It's so nice to see that someone else knows what that is like

Anything except for Opera and Country.

Earlier I was big into Beatles, BTO, Guess Who, etc. Also a big Pink Floyd and Alan Parsons fan. Over the last ten years or so, I've really gotten into movie soundtracks - which are the modern equivalent of classical music - which I also like.

Alice in Chains. In particular, "Would?" is my all time favorite song. I think it's quite possibly the most menacing song I've ever listened to and harkens me back to my overall chemical based, non-healthy lifestyle, and mood during my college years in the early 90's. Layne Staley's vocals on that song sound like he's singing from just north of Hell. Gives me goose bumps listening to it twenty plus years later.

I like a lot of stuff, at different times for different reasons. I did just inherit an ipod from my son, my first ipod. So, I've been having fun adding music, but it's hard. I don't want to waste my time or money on mediocre songs. And I want songs that mean something to me. So, here is a weird sampling of what I have downloaded so far.

Gone, Gone Gone --Alison Krause and Robert Plant
Gimme Dat Ding -- The Pipkins
Copperhead Road -- Steve Earle
We've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two -- Oliver!
It Was a Very Good Year -- Sinatra
Lonely Boy -- The Black Keys
My Favorite Things -- Julie Andrews
The Mills Brothers -- Daddy's Little Girl, Paper Doll, Up a Lazy River
Earth Song -- Michael Jackson
Counting Crows -- Big Yellow Taxi
The Scientist-- Coldplay
Dark Lady -- Cher
Times Like These -- Foo Fighters (I would've preferred the acoustic version with David Grohl, but couldn't find it.)
Flagpole Sitta-- Harvy Danger
Walkin' After Midnight -- Patsy Cline
Ain't No Rest for the Wicked-- Cage the Elephant
Shine-- Collective Soul
Hold On -- Alabama Shakes
What's New Pussycat -- Tom Jones
I Melt With You -- Modern English
They Call the Wind Mariah -- Howard Keel

My favourite type of music, judging by my favourite bands (Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd) they seem to be the ones that try new things, experiment with formulas and are fine with breaking the norm. I vastly prefer that to the bland, predictable pop music that seems to have permeated this century.

Oh, and I also really love a fair bit of orchestral music, for example, the Dracula soundtrack by Wojciech Kilar. Dunno what I would call that, gothic , romantic orchestral ?

At the moment my fav five songs are:

Paranoid Android- Radiohead
Came Back Haunted- Nine inch Nails
For Martha- Smashing Pumpkins
Tonight, Tonight - Smashing Pumpkins
The Perfect Drug- Nine inch Nails

I'm an Irish music fan :) Glen Hansard, Liam O'Maonlai (and the rest of the Hothouse Flowers--lol), Damien Rice, Luka Bloom, and of course Van the Man... so many other good ones, as well. You live in a blessed place for music, booklover!
