I talk to dozens and through the years, hundreds of people. I ask all of them the same question, where are you going when you die? Even people that don't believe in God say they're going to heaven. Why? Most have a change of mind after they hear what the bible says, but the majority of people, Christian or not think they're good people and that being good matters more than being saved. But more importantly, what do you think happens to you when you die? whether or not you believe in Jesus Christ?

...I'm an Agnostic and I believe we go on in some way...but have no idea how to define that....do I think it's the biblical version of Heaven?...No...but beyond that, who can tell...unless you take it on faith alone?...and I'm not willing to do that anymore....been to much death and horror for me to believe in a loving God...

Well, according to my strict Catholic upbringing, very few people go to heaven upon death. The majority pass with some venial sins and go to purgatory, waiting for the second coming, where another judgement takes place where our bodies will join our souls. Personally, I don't know if there is a heaven or what heaven is if it does exists. I try and live a decent life and will let the chips fall where they may.

I don't know about Heaven, but I do try to live right and treat people the way I want to be treated. Sometimes I mess up, but I like to think I'll go to the right place.

I think 'after' will be much the same as 'before'.

When I die, I just know Im going to a different place, a different state of being. All that is good enough for me :)

    I dunno. If there's a place after, I'll find out. If there's not, I won't.

Meanwhile, do the best with what you have to try to leave the world a little better place than you found it.

...I'm saying that if there is some type of entity out there that we wish to ascribe the title of "God" to, and further to cast him/her/it as both beneficent and judgmental-this entity is supremely uninvolved with our destiny....for every "miracle" or prayer allegedly answered-there are hundreds of horrible incidents, which are visited upon our fellow humans by other so called "humans", which automatically rules out a caring and loving being, intimately intertwined with our existence. Conversely, there is no divine retribution being visited upon those responsible for the minor and major evils...so I would have to say that humankind is responsible for their own fuc*ery...

I am having such a hard time putting any response into words that make sense. I was borderline Agnostic/Atheist for 90% of my life. And then I had an experience followed by a journey followed by conversion to Catholicism. And like Paul on the road to Damascus, I can't go back to not believing. I try to live a pious life, and I fail miserably. I feel that God's grace is deeply personal, and evil is just as personal - it's the monster in the shadows. I love this line from an Indigo Girls song: "Darkness has a hunger that's insatiable, and lightness has a call that's hard to hear" . But yes, I believe.

Just two choices, Heaven or Hell? What about those of us who aren't participating in that particular brand of belief?

Paul recognized this in his letter to the Romans: "We know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold into slavery to sin. What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but do what I hate." We're imperfect. God knows this about us, and loves us anyway. We are expected to keep trying, and keep trying, and keep trying, not because man will think badly of us, or because we feel we 'have to' do something, but out of a return of that love given to us so freely.

And I'm with Roger Ebert - I wasn't aware before I was born and I'm sure I won't be aware after.

Sartre said, "Hell is other people". I guess for those who subscribe to that theory, they're already there. :biggrin2: I'm not Christian and I don't believe in the concept of heaven and hell. I've always loved the lyric from John Lennon's Imagine-- "Imagine all the people living for today."
