I love me a good Siggy thread!!!

When I'd spend the weekend with my grandparents, on the way there, we'd stop at the gas station/country store and I would get some caramel creams.

Always watched The Wizard of Oz at Thanksgiving at grandparents house and didn't know it was in color until I was 8!

and my favorite cereal was Trix! I voted for the rabbit to get his own bowl one year! Paid for the postage to send my vote in myself! I was so proud when he got it!!

I remember setting up ramps with tires and plywood for our bikes. We would make lines in the dirt for who jumped the farthest and try to beat each other. (If I saw my kids doing that,!! ;))

Reading outside, every day. Even if it was cold, I would go to a little 2 room house that was the first house on the property, to read. No window panes, but it was our "playhouse" and it was my favorite place. Another favorite place was leaning up against the fireplace chimney at my grandparent's house. The grass was lush and soft and I sat there for hours, reading.

And walking, walking, on all the field roads, with my little tape recorder, singing at the top if my lungs. :biggrin-new: And later, with my Walkman. :applause:

Being with my grandparents during the summer months. They would spend two months in the Catskill Mts on a working dairy farm. This was a treat for a NYC kid. Being the only child around, the farm owners let me have the run of the farm. Taught me to grow veggies, care for the animals, help with cooking the homemade meals. In those days, cows were milked by hand- sunrise and sunset back to the barn. The last year I was there they had gone to milking machines.
I bottle fed the calves, rode the horses, played in the pond with the frogs. All things my parents would have strongly disapproved. The owners even registered a calf in my name. Hajee-baba--- all because I could never say Ali Baba. I miss those days.................

Bottle feeding calves. Oh such fun. On our farm, if we were bottle feeding it meant the mama had died. But, oh to have the calf come running when they saw you! It was fun until they got big enough to suck the nipple right off the bottle and you got soaked with milk. I can smell it now. ;-D

My brother and I would fill paper bags with dog poop and set them on fire on our neighbors' doorsteps. After ringing their doorbells of course. We'd race from the scene and either watch the ensuing hilarity from the shrubs or climb the willow tree that gave view to pretty much the whole street. Mr. Becker caught us one time and ....well....my parents didn't share in the hilarity I'm afraid.

I remember when Tang was in the jar and it was very good. Lost something since putting it in envelopes and a box.

My childhood was the most magical time of my life. If I could go back and have all the same people populating my wish, I would go in a heart beat.

I remember the woods, the creeks, the vines we swung on, our own pet cemetery that we decorated with yule logs at xmas and had our own stone benches, tree forts, Riding my stingray with no hands. My best friend was older than me and very smart. We had a nature club and they would teach us how to identify plants and trees, and then quiz us one at a time sitting on the old swing set in the woods. Sliding down the neighbors big hill in the winter. Catching snakes and frogs and then letting them go again.

Kickball games in the cul-de-sac. Baseball games up the street. "Shooting" each other on the neighbor's hilly front lawn and judging who did the best death scene with our fall and roll down the hill. "Smoking" cattails.

Tetherball. Playing harriet the spy, keeping a card catalogue on everyone in the neighborhood. Reading Nancy Drews. Watching Dark Shadows when I raced home from school. Going to Little Sisters Weekends at my sister's college. ( I was always the youngest little sister and treated very special by all the girls.) Watching Here Comes the Bride for Bobby Sherman. Buying Tigerbeat for Bobby Sherman, Davy Jones, Robby Benson. Playing barbies.

I could go on and on and on.

Really homesick for the farm now. Thinking about growing up.

There was a small crab apple orchard on the place we lived when I was about 13, 14. When those trees would blossom in the springtime...oh such a wonderful smell. Then eating so many crab apples in the fall, you swore you would never eat another one. Until next year. :)

Learning to drive on the field roads and feeling so grown up when Dad would say, "Go ahead and move the pickup up some," when we were setting irrigation tubes out for the summer, or while irrigating, or picking them back up in the fall. :biggrin-new:

Riding in the beet truck with my Grandma during harvest. Sugar beets smell so great, fresh out of the ground. Riding in the truck wasn't as fun during bean or corn harvest. Beet harvest was the best.

Wish my kids could do some of this stuff.
