Glad to hear it - my Dad was in a place that was almost Medieval (in retrospect) - he had been in a great facility but then my sister came out here, got him and took him back to Toronto. He ended up back in Winnipeg (it's a long story) - not quite a horror story but darn close (RIP Dad)

Hard to believe it has been 13 years since he is gone.
I'm sorry your family had a bad experience with a long term care facility. Unfortunately there are still sub par facilities out there. Not sure about Canada, but the competition for nursing homes is fierce here in the states, so if you aren't running a 3+ star rated facility you won't have much business

"some" places in Fl do not follow that rule. They are filled to max and substandard in many repeats. Yes, there are quality facilities and they too are filled to the max. Generally, family have little choice where to place a parent- in my area of Fl. You almost have become a 24/7 advocate in some facilities. Have seen this personally and with friends.

I guess it depends where you are in the states.... out here in AZ, there are a great many facilities, VA had many facilities too.
In all honesty, you have to be a 24/7 advocate in ANY medical facility....even a hospital, because of the volume of patients cared for. Personally I feel that until the feds mandate staffing ratios for nursing home facilities, you will continue to see substandard care. I've been working in this environment for 16+ years now, and it's really hard to provide quality care when you don't have enough staff to provide that care. Also nursing home wages are not even close to hospital wages.... I could be making $10-$20 more an hour in a hospital /base pay, but I choose to work in a SNF/LTC facility because I feel this is where I make a difference. It always saddens me to hear of people having poor experiences in nursing homes.... because I know there are good places out there...

I agree about being a 24/7 advocate and also about staff patient ratio. I applaud all the hard working staff and administrators who do care. Wages are a factor in FL. The caring staff leave and ill trained and non empathic staff replace. This is not true for "all" facilities, but many in FL. The elderly population is ever present in my state. I do thank you for caring-if makes a difference in the life of a patient.
