Have read about 3/4 of his short stories. Going to dive into those at some point. Maybe just pick at random ones on weekends. It's been a long time since I've read The Jaunt but I remember being quite shaken by that one. Apt Pupil (though a novella rather than a short story) was, to me, probably the most disturbing thing he's ever written.

The Regulators is one of my top 2 (thats as close as I have ever managed to nail down a FAVE) so I strongly recommend it. I think generally "take a stab" is the best advice though!

Of the list you provide and since you've apparently read Desperation, I'd recommend The Regulators first, then Lisey's Story. The Regulators is a companion novel to Desperation, includes at least one of the same characters, and is just plain interesting in a unique, bizarre way. Lisey's Story is a must read as it's so well-written, and an atypical-for-sK love story. (I've read that sK says Lisey's Story is his own personal favorite.)

I couldn't agree more.

Faithful to her King.....
Hey Eddie Dean of New York! :) Big fan here, and I love all of his work. Lisey's Story is in my top 10, Regulators in the bottom 2. I thought I liked it okay but then after 10 years or so I tried to re read it I couldn't even finish it. Not sure what happened but I'm afraid to pick up Desperation and re read.....and other SK books actually as this happened with The Shining---only got halfway. I'm glad you had read almost all of SK's work before digging into Lisey's though. I don't think the average fan has the tools to truly appreciate it. Not sure why some Constant Readers didn't like it.,but it does seem like they can't explain why as well. It's either a love it or hate it book. <shrug>

First of all, I hope this is the proper forum. If not, I apologize!

I've been wanting to read all of Sai King's novels for a while now. The only ones left are Roadwork, The Running Man, Eyes of the Dragon, The Regulators, The Colorado Kid and Lisey's Story.

Long days and pleasant nights

I loved the Running Man (hated the movie). It's in a little rougher style; I think SK said it was written in about 3 days, with no rewrites. And Eyes of the Dragon is a MARVELOUS story. Do not miss it!

First of all, I hope this is the proper forum. If not, I apologize!

I've been wanting to read all of Sai King's novels for a while now. The only ones left are Roadwork, The Running Man, Eyes of the Dragon, The Regulators, The Colorado Kid and Lisey's Story. Either reviews of them have indicated that they're not exactly home runs or the topic hasn't particularly interested me. I just can't figure out which one to go with and have been mulling it over for quite a while. I finally just gave up and reread The Gunslinger again lol. Now that I'm done with that, I'm either going to read one of these or just move on to Drawing of Three.

Before I do that though, I wanted to ask like-minded King fans which they would go with and why. I started reading King for the horror but have stayed for his beautiful command of the English language. So I'm really just looking for the best overall story...doesn't have to be the scariest. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

If you have read Desperation then The Regulators is first of that list of books. It is different but with partly the same cast of characters. Personally it is a cointoss which book you prefere of these two. Then, since you like well-written books (and also because it is very different from other King, i thought perhaps Lisey story. Roadwork and The Running man are Novellas. They are good, easy to read but not fantastic, The Colorado kid is also a wellwritten slightly different king-story. Personally I liked it, it had a special feeling. But i know of people who was very disappointed in that book. The eye of the dragon was, i think, aimed at a slightly younger group of people than his usual books. I think the term nowadays is young adults. But it is a good read and enjoyable but not as good as many others of his, at least in my opinion.
