The reason they changed the timelines is an appropriate one for an adaptation of this particular story. The main theme of the book is remembering childhood. King exercises this very thing through the writing, putting his own memories into the words. By adapting the story into the 80s, the filmmakers were able to do the same. It also adds to the authenticity of a believable world.
