I have reason to beleive that an actor I know may have changed his name to "Hill" to avoid publicity. I also know that SK's son, Joe changed his name to "Hill". What is it about the last name "Hill"? Is it a name people adopt to avoid publicyt? Ithought Joe used this name as an author to avoid association with his dad, though everyone pretty much knows it him. Did he have a legal name change, or is "Joe Hill" a psuedonym?

Joe's middle name is Hillstrom. He dropped King and half of his middle name so he could be judged on his own for his writing talents, not his father's. Steve's shadow looms large in the writing community. I give Joe credit for doing what he did. He's been writing under the Hill name for quite a few years, started out doing short stories, and at that time no one knew who he was. I think he's made a pretty good mark with his writings.

I don't think he was kidding.

The first time I heard of Joe Hill, it was Joe Hill son of Stephen King. I never heard of him prior to that. So, it would seem, why change your name if you are going to me known as "son of" anyway.

Kingricefan says he made it on his own prior to the relationship being public knowledge. And I have no reason to doubt that. (When I first heard of Joe Hill son of Stephen King he had at least one book that was on or close to the best seller list. It was Heart Shaped Box.). So, it is very possible he "made it" prior to.

But, for those of us who only heard of him late, it is a valid question. :)

"Dracul" is dragon and "Dracula" means son of the dragon

It wouldn't really make much sense for an author to avoid publicity. As you say (and others have also said), it was a decision he made so he could make it or fail on his own terms, and I have nothing but respect for the guy for that.
It's (slightly) interesting that he didn't revert once his true identity became known, but maybe he just feels that there's one too many Kings writing in the area(s) he does.
(It's different for Owen since, AFAIK - I've not read him yet. Say sorry - he doesn't write in the same genre(s) as Stephen and Joe.)

Plus, there's a few 'King' writers that aren't even related to him out there.
