Yes, it was a niche cause marketing scheme that peaked and then crashed. Sales initially increased by 20% with media attention, but eventually went flat because of traditional outward beauty advertising, and that ‘Campaign for Real Beauty’ of Dove was retired. Outward beauty of women has been idolized for thousands of years. And it's not going away anytime soon.
It hasn't crashed. However, the emphasis continues to be put on outer beauty and women, in particular although men are not completely immune from it, are taught and reinforced constantly that their outer beauty is more important and their self-worth is dependent on it by being bombarded by this message from all sides. Please understand, I'm not against using products that enhance anyone's appearance but when a person is told that their self-esteem depends on having other people see them as whatever the current standards of "beauty" are to the point that they fall into that trap hook, line, and sinker, I am against it. This also isn't just an outer beauty issue when it leads to potentially fatal eating disorders. And bringing this back to beauty pageants, there is no need for them other than by advertisers to make money by exploiting women.

I don’t believe society has a single standard of beauty, and the perceived beauty of one woman doesn't force another to conform. I think women are intelligent enough to make such decisions for themselves regarding the outward appearance they wish to portray. Look at all the differences in women. They're all beautiful to someone. And there is no data supporting a connection between beauty pageants and violence against women. If people find beauty pageants objectionable there are hundreds of other channels to watch. By the way, I don’t watch beauty pageants. It’s not my kinda thing. But I don’t find them objectionable. They’re just another form of entertainment some people are interested in. I just don't like some people telling others what they should or should not want to watch.

It's too bad that so many young girls don't get that message instead of the one that they are constantly given by the media. True, anyone can watch or not watch but there's also nothing wrong in pointing out that these types of "entertainment" are nothing more than exploitation of women so that that message gets out and perhaps that type of behavior will change.

I don't see how a very select few numbers of women, with both beauty and talent, wanting to compete in a contest of such is the exploitation of women. Now if every girl was required to compete in a publicized beauty pageant, then I would agree with you. Perhaps we should stop from making movies, because we all know they mostly cast beautiful and attractive women for most roles unless the characters require otherwise.

I've reached the agree to disagree point.
