As much as I loved IT, I was pretty disappointed at the end when Pennywise turned out to be nothing more than . . . well, an overgrown spider.

Anybody else share my disappointment here?

Somehow I got the idea that Pennywise merely morphed into the shape of a spider. If Pennywise's true shape was that of a spider, I'd be ok with it. I'm a girl - a girl who is terrified of spiders lol

This was the biggest complaint I heard from library patrons when they finished IT. Maybe the problem isn't the spider but the writer's conundrum of finding a finite embodiment for an eternal creature. No matter what King would have chosen it would have been equally underwhelming. As long as the clown is morphing into the fears of its victims we are focused on the demonstration of its power. The minute we learn its true form, It becomes decidedly less impressive. I don't know, I think a spider is brilliant if you stop and think about it, but I see your point.

If you are new to The Dark Tower series you'll discover this idea plays an important role in later books.

Pennywise isn't a spider. It isn't a clown, a werewolf, a vampire, a mummy or a thousand other things besides. Its name isn't really Pennywise or Robert Gray for that matter. The final shape that it took in the cave was impressed upon it by the Losers. The monster itself never "dresses for dinner" in its own Lair. The spider-like shape was merely the closest thing their minds could make sense of from the metaphoric nature of a spiritual entity. That doesn't mean it looks spider-like and thus their mind agreed upon a spider. It means the creature's ephemeral nature embodies certain behaviors and relationships between it and people. It acts rather like a spider and thus in the end they made it look like one. Does that make sense? You could consider all of Derry, its personal killing ground, as no more than a giant web where it resides and feeds.

We all know that the monster's true form is nothing but maddening lights outside of reality, always seeking a way in. Sometimes it finds a pinhole in that cosmic barrier and through such openings a tendril will ooze through. The irony is that since it cannot come through entirely, the bit of the Deadlights that slips in must conform, somewhat, to reality and be quasi-physical. Even how it thinks and perceives itself is a reflection of the reality it has invaded. Think about when it was hurtling Bill toward the larger, truer part of itself. The further they moved away from reality, the more insane, chaotic and burbling the thing became. In other words, the Deadlights outside of reality as a whole is not Pennywise or even aware of itself in the same way. It is primordial chaos out there. Not only is its physical from created by reflecting our reality and understanding, its own understanding of itself is also shaped and created only as it comes in. The part of the Deadlights that slips through manifests as an avatar which is unique and individual, created by the world, location, rules of reality, and the people themselves which it reflects.

When I first listen to it said that it was what they Mind could make out. But when the book was total over at the end. I got to some deep thinking...witch could be total wrong. Very wrong...but keep in mind I just had got done listing to it and it was 4am at work. I thought that it being spider sort had to do with Beverly her act at the end bond them from the tunnels and free them from child hood and got them out of there. Something about girls bring frighten by spiders. But I also thought how it threads of fear where to many worlds...and how it was about to spread that fear to all those other worlds in center way only females can.

Then The line I like best came towards the end. When center shell one said something about throwing rule book away when things are just this big. So that when I thought spider fit it perfect. Spider said come in to my parlor to the fly...it made sense to me at end....But now read my post back I think middle my point.
