There is a mystery about winter coats. Why are they always dark in colour(almost anyway)? I look around and i see black, dark blue, grey, dark green and so on. All colours that, as soon as the daylight goes turn to black and makes people invisible. It wouldn't be possible to blame a driver or a bicyclist for hitting walking person. I almost walked into a person today. It wasn't until he was a couple meters away that i noticed there was a person there. Why are there so few white or even brightred that have a bigger possibility to be seen. And no, not everyone wear reflexes. Any wise insights?
You have an excellent point. Herei8n Ireland where it gets dark before 5 p.m. all I see are dark colored coats. The best I can do on my bike is to put hi vis yellow over my coat and make sure my lights are working.

In Stockholm it gets dark at 3 PM. Further north it is no daylight at all. That is the price thay have to pay for having the midnioght sun in summer. At this time, at the midwinter point, there is no sun at all.

I can't find a photograph of the coat I wear right now.
It's a Wolfstädter piece of Trachten from Germany. Read: a long black flannel coat that stops the wind, with dark green detailing on it. It's traditional German fashion, the same kind of design that goes into Dirndls and Lederhosen.
It has a detachable capelet, horn buttons, and a nice lining. It's heavy as all get-out, maybe about 12 pounds of coat, but I don't care. I'm warm.

Lily... are you trying to tell us that you're... a flasher?!
(I'm sorry, my mind went straight to "Trench-coat".) ;;D

That happened just this past week in my little town. It was dark and raining and the lady who was hit and killed was wearing a dark coat so the driver wasn't able to see her in time. He'd thought he'd hit an animal. I didn't know her personally but was told she had just retired.

I've noticed the black coat/black jacket phenomenon too, it seemed to be particularly prevalent in town where all the professional types worked. I think it's just a conservative color choice. Personally I've tended towards brown and olive drab green but my most recent coat is black with some red on the sleeves.
