Anyone been watching? I've watched the US women play. I hope they win!

I watched the tie game against Sweden. I said this in another thread, but I enjoy watching women's world soccer more than men. They get tripped, they fall down, they get up, and keep running, rather than lying around screaming like something got amputated, like the men do.

I love soccer, and the antics of the men suck the watching joy right out of me. The women don't do that.

Anyway, I think the US women need to sharpen their passing up the side on the outlets. They kept lobbing it too long. That's like Mr. Couch Potato saying, "Jeez, Peyton, put more zip on the ball." But for the most part, I'm just in awe of the athletic prowess on display at the pitch.

Next US game - Tuesday against Nigeria (edit: which I just noticed Lord Tyr already announced, sorry, and where's my coffee?). Flakesie, NZ plays China on Monday, Western Hemisphere time.

They played Sweden but didn't manage to beat them. It was a goalless draw but very exciting game. Both teams very nearly scored. That is seen as a success in sweden. We played very poorly in the first game against Nigeria and only got a 3 all draw. The US should have no problems beating them.

My son and his fiancee went to the stadium here in Winnipeg on Friday and saw Australia against Nigeria and Australia won two nothing; then the second game was Sweden against US and according to him nobody scored (??? :icon_eek::umm:) 0 - 0

I don't really know much about soccer myself but they seemed to enjoy it.

Cool Kurben! You and I posted about the same game - my son said two girls got injured in the game - one was Swedish (but she is okay now).

Okay, I may have to retract that. Has there been a rule change about whining? I watched part of a men's qualifying game, England v Slovenia, and they played tough and didn't do little-girl cries. England's second goal was pure artistry.

That does happen in soccer when two skilful teams manage to fight off the others strengths. Both the goalies made some great saves and it was an intense game. Many of the US-players have or is playing in the Swedish league so they know eachothers strentghs and weaknesses very well.

They were going for he long pass and couldn't get their forwards involved. Considering how athletic Leroux and Press are, they should have been more patient.

Not to mention, if I remember right, that the Swedish coach used to be the American coach, so she's very familiar with the players and their idiosyncracies.

I agree. They spent so much time in Sweden's half to come away with nada. I suspect that they were trying to out-fitness with the long game, but they should've just kept working the half field. And then they wouldn't have been so stretched out and susceptible to the counterpunch.

Well, thats little of what soccer is about. Not about having the ball a lot but actually making something with it. And in that department they were even. But i think a 1 all score would have been a better reflection of the game.

Oh, absolutely. I played fullback and I've been in games myself where our offense was pinning their ears back the whole time, and then here comes the ball sailing over, one of their guys is on a dead run, and pow! nothing to show for our good efforts but a loss. Frustrating.

I didn't see the whole game, but it sure looked like Sweden came the closest with that defensive header off the crossbar. However, had that defender not be so astutely playing that position, it was a certain goal.

The US didn't have the right game plan. Rapinoe also tried to do too much a few times and gave up the ball too easily. They never found a way to get Leroux and Press involved. When they attacked the flanks, that was when they were getting more opportunities. It seems like a part of the problem is that Wambach is past her prime and Morgan is injured, and they haven't found their identity yet.

If she had been 5 cm shorter it would have been a goal.. Sigh But the US also had their chances.
I was a soccer goalie for my school in some tournaments. I was one of the few crazy enough to throw myself after the ball when we always played on gravel. With the forwards feet and gravel combined it hurt but it always hurt afterwards not during, i guess because of all the adrenalin or something.

Gar! Sounds painful! I hated playing Goalie and almost never did because I was so short. I usually played striker or on the right wing.

Most people do. Only the strange ones become goalies. But i most have been rather good. I remember a tournament against other schools. We lost the quarterfinal but afterwards the opposite team told me i was one of the best goalies they come across. Never got that kind of comments from my own team.
