This reminds me of a book by Evan Hunter, Every Little Crook And Nanny. Hunter was a dramatic novelist (and also wrote the 87th Precinct novels under the name Ed McBain), but that book was a riot. One character, Cockeye, was a counterfeiter who was asked to supply 50,000 in fake bills. And the bills were constructed sublimely, except... yeah, you can guess from his name how all the presidents came out.
