Some time ago, I was all offended at SK's depiction of authors. I can't remember which movie it was, there's a few that the main character is a writer. But he was always messy and looking totally disheveled. I said to myself, "Hey, I don't look like that! I'm always neat and clean." I should have known he knew what he was talking about.
Speed forward about 3 years to now. My first fiction novel is just about complete. My hair is a mess, I'm not sleeping well, and heck, if I get a shower before 3 PM, I'm having a good day, LOL! There's only a little bit more on my edit until this is a complete manuscript. (It's a complete story, I'm just editing it and putting it into one document as I wrote the characters in chapters. Now it's mostly putting all this together.) Even though it's almost done, I'm a total wreck. I eat, sleep, dream of the book and its final completion.
I admit, I don't have the best writing circumstances. I have custody of my grandson and he's only in preschool for about 3 hours every day, except Fridays, when there is not school for preschoolers. It has taken me about three years to get this far, what with the research I had to do and everything that tried to get in the way of this book being finished. The 18,000 feet of snow we got last winter didn't help much as my grandson was home from daycare more days than I care to count. So yes, between life, grandsons and having only 12 viable hours a week to write, I'm pretty proud of myself!
I've sort of followed some of Sai King's advice from "On Writing" and I think it would be great if I could pull a manuscript out of my sleeve in less than a year like he can, but either way, I've just about got it done and I'm the total epitome of that writer in that movie, LOL! So far, my readers love it and the one who is a retired editor says that it's so good it's only got small things here and there and could be presented to a publisher as is! Whoa, I guess the method works!
So, I'm feeling ratty and a bit abashed. I have to say, you were right, Stephen King, you were totally right!
So, if you see me walking down the street, hair sticking up, makeup a mess, wrinkly clothes and looking in a terrible hurry, yup, that's me. Say hi and give me a hug! I've come a long way in these three years! I'm hoping maybe some day very soon, there will be a website, sort of like this one, where you can tell me how much you loved my book, No Mercy. I'll tell you I have Stephen King to thank for it, messy hair and all! Love ya guys! Stay tuned, it's coming! Muwahahahahaha!
