The Darkside of the Moon (England really)
When my broadband gets fixed (hopefully in about 3 weeks) I will flood this thread. Until then I'm on my phone's 500mb a month and I've used 120mb in 3 days, so no vids I'm afraid.

1. Chris Rea - driving home for Christmas
2. The pogues - fairytale of new York
3. Mariah Carey - all I want for Christmas is you.

Yes, they are all common, and indicative of commercialised Christmas - and I don't make a single apology for it. I have about 25 on my phone - slade, wizard, Paul McCartney, status quo, Darlene love, Andy Williams, shakin stevens etc, etc.

I have one devisive/controversial song - disgraced paedophile glam rocker Garry glitter, another rock and roll Christmas. As much as I hate him and what he did, I'm always going to like the song. Which is strange because I just can't bring myself to listen to the lost prophets anymore.

Oooo, Christmas in Hollis is a good one! :) I also like Christmas Is by Run DMC!

I should probably add All I Want For Christmas Is You, too. That one never gets old!

"Carol of the Bells." Just beautiful.
"The Little Drummer Boy" album. Really, for me, the all-time classic album to put on for holiday listening.
"What Child Is This." I'm not religious, but something about the line, "Raise, raise the song on high. The Virgin sings her lullaby," makes me smile.
The Bing Crosby/David Bowie duet on "The Little Drummer Boy." Poignant.

The besties of the interpretations, at least to me.

Liz Story - Greensleeves
Quiet and magnificent.

Sheryl Crow - Blue Christmas
Never liked the song until she covered it. It picks up a head of steam right around the 1:38 mark and unrolls all its bluesysexyfunky pile o' pout in the last half.

Cocteau Twins - Winter Wonderland
A walk in the snow - on acid. Try decorating the tree while listening to this.

....for a capella in all its purity, my favorite is Angels We Have Heard on High.

....but speaking as a some-time singer, I could never get through this one. I was asked to perform it for a holiday concert and couldn't make it through a single rehearsal without choking up. I moved on to something else that didn't affect me the same way.

Maybe it's the song's WWII significance, maybe it's the melody paired with the lyrics, maybe it's the idea of being in a war zone away from family and loved ones - I don't know what about the song gets to me, but it does.
