Hello Mr. King.
Remember that bit that you wrote in the Dark Tower series about how it is impossible to shoot accurately from machine guns?
Here's a video that could prove you 100% right.
But it does the complete opposite.
Damn Russians, always spoiling it for everybody.

...glad you've joined us, but given the time of the novel's writing...he is correct...older machine guns are notoriously difficult to keep on target during long bursts because of the muzzle rise...find a Thompson and give it a whirl...
Also, an extended barrel on any fully automatic weapon can be expected to actually wobble a bit. I assume this is why guns such as Uzis tend to have rather short barrels. I've seen some autos which show no extended barrel at all.

The Russian AK-47, a couple of variants I've fired, has a compensator on the end of the barrel which expels the gas upward and out when the weapon is fired. The gas keeps the barrel from climbing when fired on full auto. The AK isn't the most accurate weapon to begin with, but at close range on full auto, it's fearsome.

...so I've heard....never owned or fired one-but the guys I know that have, say the AK ain't worth a crap at distance, but close-up it'll ruin somebody's day....

Hi Dima and welcome to SKMB (I think? :umm:)
When was that bit written about the machine guns?

I fired an SMG in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia back in basic training in June 1980 and I do not recall it being very accurate at that time (or maybe it was just because I had been a civilian up until that point!)

Did you enjoy the DT series, other than that niggly little thing that stuck in your craw about the accuracy of machine guns?

Come back and post some more - lots of people here to discuss books with (or movies or Glocks without safeties etc. ;))

Well, now you see why AK is a superior weapon.
Well, I also dinged the bullseye regularly at 500 yards. I'm thinking the AK-47 wasn't so well known for that. However, I've never trained on an AK, so I don't have a basis for comparison. And the M-16 has been replaced in any event.

I frankly have doubts about being able to keep the target sighted with any handheld automatic weapon while it's firing on full auto.

Why the discussion on fully automatic weapons? As far as I know for the most part, fully automatic guns aren't allowed to be owned by any private citizen in the US. But if it's just in regards to the DT series then I can see it. But a question for Grandpa, the M-16 you fired, was it the old variety with continuious fire or the newer one that only fires in burst of 3 which improves accuracy?
