Honestly, I missed the phrase when I read the book, and "dancing hives" doesn't bring anything to mind. Hives are pretty static. They grow, they diminish, they complain (itch), but they don't "dance," at least not for me.

But I must say, being on a board that can elicit a response from Stephen King gives me the thrill of close-to-celebritydom. It's kinda like when I was coming back from overseas, waiting outside of LAX, and a station wage pulled up with CRANE(some number) on the license plate, and Bob Crane comes out, joyous, laughing with his family, greeting everyone, loading into the All-American Station Wagon. That's a true story. That brush with celebrity thing.

Well.... on the other hand, maybe Bob Crane isn't the most lovely example.

ANYWAY, if Mr. King can't explain it, and it doesn't resonate with me, I'll have to dismiss it, fuggedaboutit, and focus on the other 5,999,999 good terms in the book.

If a bit tragic. Mr. Crane apparently had a dark side, far removed from the happy family man with the station wagon, and did not die well.
I remember. When I was looking up a picture to post on this thread, an actual photo showed up on google images of him participating in an orgy. Definitely some "firsts" for me… Bob Crane in an orgy… anyone in an orgy!
