I recently read The Girl Next Door, by Jack Ketchum. Good book, but extremely disturbing. My other favourite novels are The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, and The Diviners, by Margaret Laurence. And another wonderful novel is ROOM by Emma Donoghue.

i don't know where to post this, but has anyone read 'The divine Comedy' by Dante or Paradise Lost by Milton. We did it in honours english for the Leaving cert, but as you know i was not allowed into the Class, because i was a messer. hmm let me think, Stephen Fry and Brendan o'carroll are comedians and look at what they achieved.

I have read parts of Dante. It is a biggie. Paradise Lost is one of the Classics i haven't read. I'm a bit curios though. A lot of times in some books i read the characters make references to it and you like to be able to folow the thought.

I haven't read Dominion yet, but love CJ Sansom's Shardlake novels.

Hunter
it is an alternative history i.e hitler won after Dunkirk and churhill is on the run as a rebel. it is 1952 and in the dominion office there is a spy who knows a scientist about something the Americans have developed that will upset the balance of power.... whet your appetitie. This was my first acquaintence with CJ Samson and i really enjoyed the book. Partly i enjoy history and partly i am interested in WWII.

Going full Brit here:
Ian Rankin (Scottish crime writer)
Peter James (English Crime)
John Connolly (Supernatural crime, Ties with King as my favourite author)
Probably not as recognisable names in the US as the UK but all well worth a read.

I believe Emma Donoghue lives in Canada, or did when she was writing ROOM. She may have moved to the US since then.
Emma Donoghue is irish. like most Talented Irish People, U2(believe it or not, Bono is hated in ireland. anyone successful in Ireland is hated) She moved to get out a country that hates people who are gifted/talented. Don't blame her. Oscar Wilde Died in Paris penniless But a brillant command of the english Lexicon. James Joyce I think is buried in Switzerland. Anyone gifted in any of the arts/sport/computes etc has to leave Ireland to attain recognition. I will give you an example: Katie Taylor - an brillant female exponent of the art of Puglism, she trains with men, had no factilites in her gym for her to 'spend a penny' she had to go to the local hotel. nice huh. When Katie was Fighting for the World Championship(she is unbeaten as of yet) our f****** so called national station wouldn't show her fighting. Of course instead of suportting a retiring brillant Lady they would rather show our F***** hyprocritcal. scum of politicals, who only interest is not in the people of ireland but themselves. i.e if you are a T.D you get a pension of 100,000 now if you are a td in two posts guess what that is a pension of 200,000 per year plus expenses, plus a car etc. They get expensives for PAddy's day - trying to promote irish abroad. don't be fooled, they will go to london, paris, moscow Perth and the US at our expense Stay in the most expensive hotels eat with the money makers etc. I have to vote in the electons otherwise the government will get my vote. i will not give those b****** my vote. Plus, People have died for the vote in other countries. so i should vote.

Anyone coming to IReland Be ware of unscruplous politicals, you will love the people, they are Friendly and will help you out in any way we can. We have some of the most beautiful scenry in the world (when we have the sun). We have a sense of humour and we welcome the 'new Irish' because we once had to do what they are doing - immigration during the great famine, moving to america, austrila Kilburn, liverpool. We are known as the fighting irish. Sometimes fighting is not enough. if you come to Ireland you will be welcome with a pint of the black stuff(i am the only paddy who doen't drink it.)
Do not drink guiness in any country, unless it is an irish pub and served by an irish barman. The only place you get good guiness(sorry bout the spelling) is in Ireland.

P.s you may have noticed, i am a chatterbox, there is a reason for that, i kissed the blarne stone. if you kiss the blarney stone you will get the gift of the gab.

Fave authors in no order:

Douglas Kennedy
Maeve Binchy
Louis De Bernieres
Gabriel García Márquez
JRR Tolkein
George RR Martin
CS Lewis

And SK (obvs!)

One writer who seems to have passed on from this life without getting the deserved recognition (in my opinion only) for his 'Borribles' trilogy: Michael de Larrabeiti. These books transformed my childhood, and yes, I did want to run away & be Borrible :)

Lol I remember gettting refused entry to a pub in Dublin cos I was too drunk!!! Que rant from me about getting us over on cheapo Ryanair flights & then having the nerve to not let us in the pub! I also took the doormans picture, to 'warn' my fellow countrymen/women to show that Dublin was a big con! Then I woke up the next day with a raging hangover & feeling shameful..

There is the modern fantasy author from Poland, Andrzej Sapkowski. He has a series of 8 books called "The Witcher". The world described there is not Tolkien-style epic and bipolar (orcs are bad, all the rest are good), but more realistic (realistic elves and dragons, yeah!), mature and rough. As for me, he is a deserving representative of modern fantasy and is worth being mentioned.

When we Win at something we drink, when we Lose we drink, when we are on are lunchbreak from work we drink. you have got to be the only person I know to be Refused to served Drink. In Dublin, they will serve you until ...... Do you remember the name of the pub. Was it on the Northside or Southside. If there was a doorman it was probably a club. I am sad to say i am ashamed of that doorman. He i letting our reputation down.

I know!!! Can you believe it?? It was one of the pubs in Temple Bar (in the middle). It looked very much like an 'Irish' pub from the outside - we had already been in there an hour or so earlier, and we realised that actually it wasnt very 'irish' at all - they had these bookcases full of books, but if you happened to take one of the books off the shelf, it waas only half a book! They were just there for props/effect! Anyway we decided to try & find a proper Irish pub, couldnt find one, decided to go back to that pub, & the doorman wouldnt let us back in! I honestly say that we werent even that drunk - no crying/fighting/shouting/vomiting - just walking up the road arm in arm chatting quite loudly & excitedly. I think he must have watched us approaching & decided he wasnt going to let English in. It was very disappointing.
