Unfinished Song was called Song For Marion over here. I agree - lovely film, Terence Stamp never better.

Still haven't seen the Whedon Much Ado, but I loved the Branagh version - Keaton's Dogberry didn't reach for subtlety!

Les Mis movie is a different animal to the stage version. After we'd seen it, my wife said "So much right, and so much wrong." But the adaptation inevitably abridges the book substantially and, let's be fair, brings Hugo's work (or much of it) to the appreciation of many more than the book.
I felt like so much that made the story Les Miserables unique and iconic were jettisoned for "set pieces" that did little but try to tearjerk. I should probably see the stage production. And thanks for catching my error in Dogberry's name-trying to comminicate using my phone is hell (lol). Fillion's Dogberry was unique-he caught the ridiculousness of the character, but he also had a strange dignity at times--it was really lovely. I can see why the NYTimes suggested his performance as best supporting actor nomination worthy.

X-Men: Days of Future Past. It was Grandma's second favorite X-Men, after the first one. She liked it a lot. I thought it was decent and worth going to see, but there were too many things about it that bothered me and dented my Willing Suspension of Disbelief. I'd put some them in a spoiler here, but the movie hasn't been out that long, and I just don't want to put a spoiler out there, even disguised, for those who have yet to see the movie.

So it's in the Enjoyable category for me. Doesn't make the Really Good grade.

I haven't checked on the thread for a bit. I see the references to Les Miz. We thought the movie was pretty good, pretty compelling, but here again, not a stunner. However, Anne Hathaway's doomed soliloquy was indeed stunning. It was the high point of the movie for me. It stayed with me for a while.

Paranoia-Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman, Harrison Ford. Eh. it was an okay, HYour phone will be the death of you" movie. BH and I decided 20 mins in that it needed a drinking game: take a drink whenever Hemsworth took his shirt off or wore a tank. Decided we didn't want to be that schnokered with teens enjoying a fire in the backyard. Followed that up with the vastly superior Headhunters-4th time for me, first for BH. GREAT Norwegian caper movie. One of my favorites.

Absentia.

It wasn't as good as I thought but it created an emotional reaction in me because that's what we had to do with my daughter's dad's death certificate. Usually the rule is that you have to wait 7 years if you have no physical remains of the person to match with the DNA they found at the site of his death.
So they give us this form, which says 'Death in Absentia' at the top of the paper, meaning the person has disappeared (they called it vaporized in the book '1984' ) and no evidence can confirm him dead. But that form makes it a legal death anyway. All of it was totally convoluted, and at the time of my extreme grief (10 days after he was lost) I thought it was totally STUpid. My dad thought it was too. He even said: "You have to prove the deceased is a confirmed death? Well he's not HERE anymore, that should count for something."

Anyway, the movie kept reminding me of that but since it DIDN'T distress me too much to be reminded I decided to watch the whole movie.
I think horror movies have gone from one extreme to the other. They used to have the protagonist live in almost every horror story. Now in the movies, hardly ANY of them end up the victor. I don't like it at that extreme either.

I saw "The Blind Side" recently for the first time - it's a few years old I think - not too bad and I liked how at the end they showed the real people it was based on.
Good movie! I bawled. LOVE Sandra Bullock! Whenever I need a smile, I watch "The Proposal." Ryan Reynolds is fantastic in the eye candy department too! ;)

I finally got around to watching the last (latest) of the Bourne franchise - The Bourne Legacy.
Jeremy Renner is forgettable. There are many more interesting actors out there who could have really nailed this one, but Renner didn't do it for me.
Renner quickly became the 'flavor of the month' in Lala-Land and has just as quickly disappeared. I never warmed to him at all and always wondered just what everyone else saw in him.

Saving Mr Banks (Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson)

Based of the story of Walt Disney trying to acquire the film rights for "Mary Poppins" from an extremely reluctant and difficult author. For over 20 years, Disney tried unsuccessfully to get the film rights. When they finally got Mrs. Travers to at least consider giving them the rights, the difficulties were just starting. The movie is also about R.L. Travers' childhood and how her childhood relates to her Mary Poppins stories. Highly recommended.

Re-watched Only Lovers Left Alive. Really good movie. I am sure not everyone will like it, but it is really, really good. Finally, someone made something new about vampires, something that was never made before.

Watched Dorian Gray (2011). I guess they made a good movie out of the story I liked when read the book for the first time. The movie is beautiful and exciting. I don't think I will watch it again, but it is very good to watch one time.

Red Planet. Two movie came out near each other in history, both about trips to Mars. The other was Mission to Mars. As I recall both were bombed by critics. I can take or leave Mission, but like Red Planet. It's well-done imo, with a story which isn't boring, and includes Tom Sizemore, an actor I enjoy.
