GUNS. Supposed to be a non-fiction piece, but I’ve never in my life (or ever seen anyone for that matter) take “them to the shooting range once in a while, yell yeehaw and get all horny at the rapid fire and the burning vapour spurting from the end of the barrel.“ But who knows, maybe that's the way they roll in Maine.
There was a piece on NBC news a few weeks ago about a shooting range that was going to start serving alcohol. Some of the people who frequent this place had just about that attitude towards guns when interviewed. Not sure where this was.

I actually liked the bit in your spoiler. I just thought it made the SK universe a bit closer.
There's nearly always going to be some note a writer strikes that doesn't resonate with everyone. The pickinniny voice makes me cringe every time, but nowhere more than in Mr. Mercedes. It hits me the same as someone who tells a horribly racist joke, then goes, "Can you believe someone finds that funny?" (Not that I'm accusing Mr. King of being racist--it's just how it reads to me). Another is sheerly generational: most of my favorite writers come out of the massive social upheaval of the 60's/early 70's, so Vietnam is often a Rock of Gibraltar in their writing. I have to confess that I'm tired to the bone of that theme. My mind knows how life-changing that was for that generation, but I'm too young (barely) to feel the visceral connection they feel. Finally,
the self-insertion in the last books of the DT
(I'm not sure if that had to be spoilered, Ms. Mod, but I thought better safe than yelled at--lol). That was beyond bad, IMHO.
Why don't I remember what that spoiler is referring to???

Do you have a link to the segment?

And is alcohol at a range really such a bad thing? A shooting range is not a public place. What's wrong with putting some personal responsibility on the owner? We don’t prohibit car keys in bars, and if you think about it the only reason for having your car keys in a bar is to drive home after drinking alcohol. You can kill someone just as easily driving drunk, probably more so because as many of us know drunks are notoriously bad shots. ;)

No link. Sorry. I don't care if they shoot heroin at the shooting range; I was just commenting on their cavalier attitude about shooting and guns. OK. I'm done with this subject!

I do not have time at the moment to read all the replies to the thread. I am on a coffee break and only have a few minutes to type.
I really have nothing at all to complain about (honestly!). I did notice something above about how Steve should not write sex scenes (huh? :umm:

Well he may not be like the lady who made all the money with 50 Shades of Gray - I mean admit it, the writing sucked but the sex scenes were rather "titillating" :smile_002:(I do like that word). (and no my husband and I do not tie each other up :wack:

Nevertheless, he writes a pretty good sex scene in my opinion. No spoiler here, but last night I got to the 'sex' part in Mr. Mercedes:

Where Detective Hodges makes love to the sister of the lady who owned the Mercedes
. I found it not too bad and quite believable. It was not corny or whatever people say about his sex scenes i.e. laughable or whatever. I thought it was quite sweet!
If you want erotica, read erotica. If you want a good overall story, then read Stephen King! :lol2:

OK, as a writer (nonfiction) I have learned not everyone likes your style or agrees with you. While some scenes make me cringe, I think that's the point. Make us think, scare the hell out of us and plainly gross us out. No one is perfect and as writers we strive for perfection, but sometimes we goof up. However, I think King does less of that than many writers.

Are you sure ? I'm pretty close :nrvs:

:clap::lol:

I really do not think alcohol and weapons should be mixed. In the military you would be charged if they found out you were impaired when handling a weapon - to me that is just ludicrous. You are endangering yourself and the other people at the range.
Is there not a Range Saftey Officer (Warden or Range "Sargeant") to make sure people are following the rules?

My problem with the sex scenes in SK's novels is that they exist at all! I am not looking for "erotica;" I just think when he writes a sex scene, it is as though he is a 10-year old boy. I don't want them to be realistic or titillating or anything like that; I just want them to be non-existant, if possible. I will admit I was very pleased by the sex scenes in Mr. Mercedes; they were quick, tasteful and not very graphic.

Sex is a part of life- part of a relationship. SK is all about character development and it seems to me, at least, that it is written to give the reader more insight into that character. It is what would be in a realistic world/ life. I'm not into "erotica", and I don't think SK ever goes that far. It's just what it is in real life.
If you have read Lisey's Story, the telling of that relationship rings with emotional feelings.

No one seems to be getting my point. I'll just say it once more and be done with it: many (not all) of his sex scenes are very childish; as if written by an adolescent boy. They are out right laughable. This is my point. Amen.

Perhaps, but I've read almost nothing about accidental incidents at the tens of thousands of block shoots held across the country ever year at clubs that serve alcohol during the events.
