Then they shouldn't have announced 3 weeks ago that it was a public event and that tickets would be available to the public. I had it marked on my calendar and planned on trying to be the first in line. It was an incredible disappointment to not even have a chance to try and buy a ticket. Now it just comes off and another way the rich reap the benefits while loyal fans who buy all his books are left in the cold.
As the article Sunny linked to quoted, they hadn't expected to receive enough interest from the corporate sponsors alone to sell out.

Stephen's favorite quote (at least heard by the office staff) has been the one coming to mind more often, i.e. "No good deed goes unpunished."

His heart is in the right place; the logistics aren't his responsibility. Here's hoping they see many great books and programs come out of the speech, things that will benefit everybody :) I know we use our library all the freaking time--we're there at least twice a week borrowing books, movies, CDs, attending programs, doing research… Every penny they get is appreciated.

Mine name is frequently in the library as well. On the overdue list..........

LOL... so you're the culprit.

Wouldn’t it be great if King fans would work to stock their public libraries with his novels. The librarian at my local library says King books always seem to grow legs, and they appreciate when someone replaces those that have gone missing. You can make a donation and instruct the library of the particular book or books you wish to have purchased, and they’ll place a bookplate inside the front cover with your name on it.

That's a great idea--maybe those of you who have extras in your personal library or want to make a cash donation could do that at your local public library in honor of Steve's birthday coming up on the 21st--or anytime for that matter. :)

That is an excellent idea- it could become a SK birthday tradition, done yearly.
I can remember when Virginia was well, we'd search yard sales and flea markets for SK books and then donate to the local library. The SK books are always in high demand.

That is a great idea. but our library uses all their donated books and movies for their library sale. I really would love to see others get to read them.
Ours does the same with some duplicates or donated books that are worn. That's why I prefer to donate money for the library to purchase new... then I know they will remain on the shelves.

You might be able to talk with the head of the library/ committee and make a request that SK donated books be placed on the racks. Or, you could donate the funds needed to buy an extra copy of the Spring or Fall( to comes after his B'day) book. A new book is always on a long wait list. Donations to buy extra copies might be greatly appreciated.

The library is located right across the street from my daughter’s softball field. Looks like I’ll have to stop by this week after practice and give them a donation to be used for Revival when it comes out. I wonder if they would put “Happy Birthday Stephen King” on the bookplate rather than my name.

The foundation is to make money. I get it. But don't pretend they'll let the little people come when that was never the intention. Stephen King fans that are poorer and have to actually save money to go aren't worth having there anyway. I am not the only one that feels this way either there are a lot of local people that fund the library through their tax dollars that are pissed they don't have a chance to go.

I'm not pretending and as someone who had inside knowledge about the event beforehand, I can assure you that the intention of the library was to make it available to the public if the corporate sponsorships did not sell out. This is not the first event that Stephen has done in the area and probably will not be the last so I'm having a little difficulty understanding the level of outrage about it. I get it that you and others are disappointed but there have been and will be other opportunities for events to attend and as I'd pointed out, even if this event had had all 300+ seats available to the public, there was no guarantee that every person who wanted to attend would have been able to do so as it likely would have been a sellout. That is the reality and it has nothing to do with feeling that some people are more worthy than others for attendance.

It was advertised in the paper as being open to the public. If all 300 seats were available to the public then the public would have at least had a chance at tickets. It is a private function and should have been advertised as such. Sure everybody who wanted tickets may not have been able to get one but at least they would have had the opportunity to try for a ticket. Instead the opportunity was waved in their faces and snatched away. The county is matching funds (tax payer dollars) raised through this event but the local people who pay those tax dollars weren't even allowed to try to buy a ticket. That is the reason for the outrage.
