It was advertised in the paper as being open to the public. If all 300 seats were available to the public then the public would have at least had a chance at tickets. It is a private function and should have been advertised as such. Sure everybody who wanted tickets may not have been able to get one but at least they would have had the opportunity to try for a ticket. Instead the opportunity was waved in their faces and snatched away. The county is matching funds (tax payer dollars) raised through this event but the local people who pay those tax dollars weren't even allowed to try to buy a ticket. That is the reason for the outrage.
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Aug. 5, 2014) – The famous Stephen King was announced today as the speaker for the Manatee Library Foundation’s most ambitious fundraiser ever.

Manatee Library Foundation will host “An Evening with Stephen King” in January to benefit Manatee County Public Library System. Community leaders joined the library groups to announce the internationally acclaimed author during a press conference at Central Library today.

“An Evening with Stephen King” will be held at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, 502 3rd Ave. W., Bradenton, on Jan. 29. As part of the fundraiser, the Foundation hopes to raise $100,000 to help overhaul the Library System’s online operating system. Northern Trust bank was also announced as the event’s presenting sponsor.

“We are ever grateful to Mr. King,” said Foundation president Jane Plitt. “Now as caring community citizens, we need to step up and help partner with the County. Become a sponsor and help us help our award-winning Library., Libraries transform our lives as children, adults and seniors. This year our Library won the State award for “changing people’s lives. Imagine what we can do with a new operating system!”

State Rep. Jim Boyd, the event’s honorary chair, said the event will be “second to none.”

Sponsorship packages from $10,000 (Presenting Sponsor) to $200 (Advocate) are available online or by calling (941) 748-5555, ext. 6306. To guarantee tickets, sponsorship commitments must be received by Oct. 15.

The Foundation will also give away a ticket to the King event to the winner of a Page Turner contest. The contest challenges amateur writers to submit the first paragraph – no more than 250 words – of an unpublished mystery. One winner will be announced in January. (If a minor wins the contest, he or she will be awarded two tickets for guardian accompaniment.)

King’s books have sold more than 350 million copies worldwide. His most popular titles include Carrie, The Shining, The Stand, Misery, It and The Dark Tower. His He has received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America along with numerous writing awards in the fields of fantasy, fiction, horror and mystery writing.

Manatee County Library Services Manager Ava Ehde explained that proceeds from the fundraiser will go to modernize the way local patrons use library resources. The Library’s outdated online operating system controls the behind-the-scenes staff functions and affects what library patrons can see and do when they use the catalog.

For more information on the event, to learn about sponsorships visit www.manateelibraryfoundation.org Later this year you’ll also be able to purchase tickets on that site.

Noooo you can't do that. you must prolong it a few more years. Things won't be the same when you retire. Damn i swore. some people just don't respect others ,no matter what one does.
Has Steve been talking to you?! That's what he tells me, too. ;-D There are days when it can't go by fast enough and other days when I know I'll be sorry when it comes--whenever that may be.

The foundation is to make money. I get it. But don't pretend they'll let the little people come when that was never the intention. Stephen King fans that are poorer and have to actually save money to go aren't worth having there anyway. I am not the only one that feels this way either there are a lot of local people that fund the library through their tax dollars that are pissed they don't have a chance to go.

It saddens me to see your outrage over this event.
it is true that that original newspaper article stated:
General tickets will go on sale Nov. 1 and can be purchased later this year through the Manatee Performing Arts Center box office and the Manatee Library Foundation website.

However, it was always meant as a fundraiser, and when the event sold out things changed:

All tickets were quickly purchased by sponsors, but the original intent of allowing the community to buy tickets later had to be nixed.

"It was our expectation that tickets would be available to the public, but the response from the community to grab sponsorship-level sup

port blew away the limited number of tickets we had," Plitt said.

Not everything that is planned in life can be expected to happen as it was planned. Why not just be thankful the fundraiser is such a success.
I too live in Fl and pay taxes that fund the libraries. I also live within traveling distance to have attended this event. Yes, I would have needed to save for ticket price and travel expense, plus caregiver to my critters, as I live on a very fixed income. In no way do I feel that I was made to feel unworthy of attending this event. I am , instead, happy that it was sold out and the desired funds will be available-- for all to enjoy and use.
There will be other events. Let this "good deed" be recognized in a positive way.

Perhaps they could rig up a video link and house some of the 'general public' at an arena or something else close by so that the average joe could at least see/hear him speak? Maybe charge $25 or so to cover the costs of having the 'techies' get it all set up and to cover the cost of renting the space? Just a thought. Of course, Steve can always come to my house if things get too crazy out there. Tea and cheesecake, Marsha, tea and cheesecake.....

As the article Sunny linked to quoted, they hadn't expected to receive enough interest from the corporate sponsors alone to sell out.

I'm not outraged or anything, but this kind of blows my mind. How in the world could they not think that corporate sponsors would be interested in a Stephen King event in 2014?? One of the most successful, respected, and recognizable authors of all-time... and they didn't think there would be much of an interest??

I would like to understand your feelings OP. I would give my eye teeth AND my left ovary to be at the event...it didn't happen for you. (And a gazillion others.)

Have mercy! Give it up.

IF you are a TRUE SK fan...be proud SK gave his time for worthy cause.

Otherwise

Sounds like the local paper is on top of things. I usually find out about events after the fact...front page photo...me with a box full of rotten tomatoes and no place to go. I figure they must know I'll be there with a tough question like, what happened to all the purple dinosaurs? But I'm often too busy working to be able to break free and attend something anyway. If the event is only broadcast to the local inhabitants is the remainder of the world unworthy? And if they announce tickets for the general public and then change their collective mind, will they set up a larger engagement, even though Stephen King requested that the setting be intimate? Perhaps place 300 under a dome...one you can't see out of...but the masses collected in the stadium can see in? Maybe pass it...the dome...on to Survivor and they can do a take-off on the theme? I'd be torqued-off, too, Galaxi, perfectly understandable that you are mad for the manner in which the event was announced. I wonder if they go for the gold, having had this much success raising money for this library, get some of the Big Talking Heads behind the event and raise money for all manner of libraries in the area...surely those libraries are worthy. Seems like there is a story in this...maybe one I've already read, alas.

I am looking forward to the event! The website did have sponsorships available to all of us. At $200 ticket! They thought they would have $125 tickets available as well, but SK Nation is huge and i don't think anyone thought that the event would sell out (at that price and as fast as it did)! Good for them!

A small auditorium! I was surprised it didn't sell out sooner!

Then they shouldn't have announced 3 weeks ago that it was a public event and that tickets would be available to the public. I had it marked on my calendar and planned on trying to be the first in line. It was an incredible disappointment to not even have a chance to try and buy a ticket. Now it just comes off and another way the rich reap the benefits while loyal fans who buy all his books are left in the cold.

$200 is alot of money for a ticket, the price was going to be $125 (had they not sold out). I was able to convince my wife, the extra $75 was worth it to guarantee a seat! But like MS Mod announced, there will be 6 other opportunities in November! and you dont have to wait until January!

Three and a half more years, Marsha--just three and a half more years. :glare:
What is a "library" and who is this "Stephen King" fella everyone keeps mentioning? My personal confusion over this is making me quite angry and I am looking for a scapegoat. Interested? I heard you have some free time on your hands (not your feet).

State Rep. Jim Boyd, the event’s honorary chair, said the event will be “second to none.”
Oh, the irony. Boyd is a huge supporter of Rick Scott and all things Tea Party. I can't find the link, but he was also very critical of Steve's statements about the rich paying more taxes. He is pretty critical of most things SK stands for politically. But hey, the library is getting money and that is all that matters. I just found it interesting Boyd will love SK at least for the night....
