I agree . . . it is up there among my favorites. One of the things that I loved about it was the ending . . . makes you wonder what is going through the minds of people in so many real life situations that end similarly . . . there is no way to really know. I also liked how they touched on the book's ending on the TV show, and how just one subtle influence (Johnny's trainer, who didn't exist in the novel) could so drastically change the fate of so many.

Absolutely could be in the news today. Which is what makes this one of the scariest books he's written.

There's a line in the last couple of pages that gives me goosebumps every time I read it. It's such a simple line, but tells so much. Anybody guess what it is?
See above gniknehpets - I was going to answer your question but I forgot to quote you :culpability:

I personally like to think that as everyday people, along with media...non corrupt politicians...that sooner or later the truth would out and we wouldnt be suckered by someone like him....anywho, I read this one for the 1st time while on holiday and really loved it. I agree it was the only ending. I had predicted it, to a degree...though not the 'how' part. I liked it.

In my opinion this was one of SK's scariest stories. It seems to me that it could happen in real life. Politicians are scary. :icon_eek:
And I don't think it could have ended any other way.
Yep. I remember reading it as a kid, and shrugging. When I read it again as an adult--WOW. Scary, completely possible, and heartbreaking. It's one of my favorites now.

I wonder what inspired this story? Doesn't say over in the Library at sk dot com. Says for some stories, but not this one. The inspiration for Cell is a hoot. Go look. :)
I've wondered this as well. We hear quite often about what inspires some books, such as Carrie, The Shining, The Stand, Cujo, Needful Things, IT, etc. Some, however, simply slip through the cracks. Dead Zone? Dreamcatcher? Gerald's Game?

Reading the biography of Peter Hurkos, it does seem likely that he's an inspiration for the novel... he may even be mentioned in the book itself, I don't remember....
