I recently purchased a first edition hardback edition of Doctor Sleep. Before I start I want to know if I should go back and read The Shining. It has been a really REALLY long time since I've read it. I'm eager to start Stephen's latest work but don't want to miss anything because its been so long since I've read The Shining. Thoughts?

I thought it was curious that Abra...
rubs her mouth the way Jack did in The Shining
...and I'd have to crack open Doctor Sleep to tell you where...I'm about a hundred+ pages into the story...but I'm beat...work...snow...more snow...cold...it got up to 18 today and my feet are just now thawing out after being home for about an hour.

I did a re-reading of The Shining before I started Dr. Sleep. It as fun in anticipation. I thought it was a great idea to do. It brings you back to the story and fresh. Plus, it's not a hard read. I did it on audio, which was neat and brought it to life. Plus I had to get the Kubrick's version out of my head.
I'm going to reread The Shining before I tackle Dr. Sleep too.

Try the audio if you can. The reader helps you get the movie out of your head, because you don't hear Jack talking. If you need that. I did. There are things I forgot, which I am so happy I remembered while reading/listening. It makes the Dr. Sleep experience so much better.

That's what I thought. It's been so long since I read this book, I figured I really needed to refresh myself on it before I moved onto the new material. I want a smooth story. I love audios so I'll put in for one at the library.

Who is the narrator?

Campbell Scott I have no idea who he is. At first, I didn't like his voice honestly. Again I think it was the movie thing. As he went along though, it got better and I loved it. It's crazy to read to. I never thought I would like it, but it really is better than a movie sometimes. It's so relaxing!
Some narrators take a while to endear themselves to the listener. I've had trouble with narrators being matched badly to the book. I've said this before, but sometimes a very very talented narrator can be teamed up with the wrong story. Simple as that. Most times though, they win me over by the end.
