Im hoping to start compiling a master list of Stephen King's Easter Eggs. What an Easter Egg is, in Mr King's case, is an intentional reference, theme, or recurring theme that signifies something greater than the story itself. Its one of Stephen King's attributes that I admire the most because a story is no longer a linear "Once Upon a Time.... " to "..and they lived happily ever after" because there are extra dimensions and tangeants that tie it to other stories in a much larger creative universe.

I usually look for Easter Eggs in Mr King's books passively, as I have done here, so I may have missed many. If you find any in Mr Mercedes, please post them here

1) kermitfrog19 - the screenname used for the Blue Umbrella website has the number 19, which is the Ka-Tet number in "The Dark Tower". The number 19 shows up in many of Mr King's books, sometimes it is concealed (such as adding numbers up to equal 19), or in plain view like the Uniform Number in Blockade Billy

2) roadie wearing the faded Judas Coin T-Shirt - Judas Coin is the central character in Joe Hill's "Heart Shaped Box"

3) tall thug wearing a NY Yankees hat - This is a recurring theme in most SK books. Although not limited to just bad people, a NY Yankees hat is usually worn by a bad person who may or may not be the main antagonist. Ever the Red Sox fan, I'm sure this is a light-hearted inside joke with Mr King...... Im a Mets fan, so I am not offended and continually thank the Red Sox nation for Bill Buckner ;)

If you find more, please list

‘Round Here, boy band, Cam, Boyd, Steve, and Pete, also in Dr. Sleep...like that you mean? Abra's favorite boy band. I didn't find it...but heard about it. Thought I heard/read something about a mile marker/story too but could be wrong...probably wrong? I dunno.

I was reading The Library Policeman last night and one character, Dave, was telling his story and referred to his Library Policeman as The Dark Man - (The Stand).
Awesome, SharonC....I will eventually wind up starting Easter Egg threads in all the individual book/short story/movie threads (if thats OK with the Mods), and I will move this one to The Stand when I get there..

Are you looking for eggs only in Mr. Mercedes?
That old Plymouth in the horror movie, never mentioned by name
Pennywise

Was that guy munching Fritos in The Stand wearing a NY Yankees hat? Can't remember location...Boston or New York. Probably New York.

It was something I discovered awhile ago. It seems to be something that is more prevalent from SKs mid-career (from about The Stand) til the present - The NY Yankees hat is usually worn by bad people, but its not limited to just bad people - a good person could wear it but, if they do, its usually a signal or a prelude that something bad/evil cometh.....so NY Yankees hat = Bad........... The Evil Empire?.... Its a good joke on Mr King's part :)

Im going to start Easter Egg threads in all the book threads, so this one is just for Mr Mercedes because starting a giant one for all would be too long and confusing from its onset. However, later, I want to compile them into one master thread....If you feel like starting them in the other threads, feel free

Number 19 appears again in the password Mr. Mercedes gives Mrs. Trelawney for the same site. "otrelaw19" :encouragement:

The number 19 appears in the film "The Stand" part 1 the Plague, where near the start of the film, a police man visits Haps truck stop to tell him and his friend that there were army soldiers coming in to town, because there might be a case of Colora illness....in the back ground on Haps building is the number 19...

The boy band in Mr. Mercedes sings a song about The Midway and something about a Ferris Wheel. The first Ferris Wheel was invented for the World's fair that took place in Chicago on the Midway in Hyde Park. It is discussed in Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, so I was wondering if there was a connection. I believe Mr. King's daughter went to grad school at U of C, so he is probably familiar with the area.

Kent Trelawney made his fortune by investing in Microsoft. This was the suggestion of the ka-tet in the Dark Tower series. There was also a Trelawney in the Dark Tower series, though I can't remember if he was one of the people who they gave this suggestion to.

the World Fair in Chicago was the event where the H.H.Holmes (one of the first serial killer in America) Killing spree start, it is also in Chicago near Hyde park where he built his "Murder Castle " :D (hope i recall it right).

Here's one that I spotted this morning. :)
At one point, Bill Hodges is thinking about his poor relationship with his daughter, and he reminisces about the records that she used to buy when she was a little girl. He remembers one song in particular that she played over and over again (driving him and his wife crazy!), and he recalls that it "went on and on about every move you make and every step you take." He struggles to remember the name of the band, and can't bring it to mind.

The band, of course, was The Police. :) I wonder if this was his daughter's way of saying, "I really do love you, Dad," or if it was just a coincidence that she happened to like that song? Either way, I would be very surprised if this wasn't a deliberate little Easter egg from SK!
