Which is similar to why Scarlett liked Ashley. He was the forbidden fruit.

Yep, and she never really had his heart - I don't think she could stand that - and then when Ashley's wife died, and Rhett was fed up, then she wanted Rhett!

One thing about this movie, it wasn't a "cookie cutter" romance

Gone With the Wind was re-released when I was a kid. Parents took me to see the classic. I spent most of the movie wishing it would be over. I can see the appeal to it. It just didn't have it for me.

Oh, fiddle-lee-dee!

I like the flick, but I hear ya, Scarlett needs a kick in the pants. I don't think you can really blame Vivian Leigh's performance, though; I mean, Scarlett was kinda supposed to be a selfish, whiny, hard nosed b*tch. AND, it's another case where I just wanna climb into that flick, take ol Rhett aside, and say, "dude...seriously...she's just not into you. Give it up. Oh, and whatever you do, don't let yer kid ride that damn pony."
Oh, Muskie, how you do make me laugh!
I agree, for the time period, Leigh's performance was great...loved de Havilland too. If I could climb inside that flick, I'd arm wrestle Ashley Wilkes and show Scarlett what a wimp he was. Then I'd take ol Rhett aside and tell him he needs kissing and often, and by someone who knows how.

And then you'd discover Rhett wearing Scarlett's girdle.

Oh, damn.

My parents pushed the book on me too. I didn't get past the first few pages. I guess it takes the charm out of a book when it's an assignment.

Something tells me you never come to Colorado.
Hey hey now, I'm not pushing; just suggesting strongly, recommending rightly, assigning avidly, begging blatantly for you to read this book.
I am in Colorado as we speak/write.

Okay, I'm sure we've got it. I'll pick it up and start leafing through.

If I hadn't been in Wyoming all day, I'd have to resent not knowing you were here. You could've swapped indecent teacher stories with Beloved Daughter-in-Law. Or just indecent stories with Yours Truly.

Gone with the Wind is one of my top 5 books, regardless of the movie.

Have you read Rhett Butler's People or Scarlett?

The first is a prequel and I loved it. The second is a sequel, and I liked it. Probably neither will fit in to your top five, but worth reading.

Nope. Some of the best books I was introduced to were forced on me by teachers.

Although I love GWTW, both the book and the movie....some people just don't.

True enough. To Kill A Mockingbird was a high school assignment and ended up on my Top Three of All Time.

On the other hand, I drudged wearily through Lord of the Flies, then picked it up again a few years later, reread it, and it was a lot better than I'd remembered.

Although I love GWTW, both the book and the movie....some people just don't.
It's an interpersonal drama thing, I think. I'm more compelled by what will happen to people, what does happen to them, what they do, and so on. But who they fall in love with, what happens to their love, how they get upset with each other and reconcile, or not - those make for great themes in literature, but thematically, I'm just not there so much.

And I hate to say it, but I'm the same way in real life when people are talking about their interactions with others. I often zone out. I could never do the work that Sigmund or danie do. It would take too much caring about how people are relating to one another. Different tastes.

You didn't really think I was in Colorado, did you?
I'm stuck in KY getting new tires on my car right now. Timothy Oliphant is changing the oil.

I have read Scarlett, and I found it interesting. Rhett Butler's People I haven't read, but several have recommended it. I may give it a try.
