Halloween Movie Marathon 2013

Good list but I would throw Freaks in there somewhere.

Very cool. I think it is a pretty good movie with it's very own special creepiness. I made my kids sit and watch it...."but Dad, it's in black and white".....they were silent by the end of it.

32. The Revenant (FTV)
Hilarious movie! A soldier killed in combat is shipped home and buried, but he comes back to life. Problem is, he's rotting and has a craving for human blood. This is a buddy movie and at times feels like an American version of Shaun of the Dead, but it really has its own identity and twisted sense of humor. Eventually he and his friend realize they can use his immortality for good and become vigilantes who bump off the bad guys--oh, and then they drain them of their blood. I am really surprised I hadn't heard much buzz about this movie, given how fun it was. Not only was I laughing out loud much of the time, there were some seriously cool gore scenes, particularly in the 2nd half where there was quite a bit of completely gratuitous violence. The only thing that hampered the movie was that it was a bit too long at 114 minutes, some of the redundant or slower scenes could have been tightened up, and the tone was uneven at times. These are nitpicks though because I really liked this movie and will likely buy it if I can find a better version (the rented Netflix DVD I used didn't look very good). 4 out of 5 stars.

33. Vampyr
Classic but lesser-known vampire film from the early 30's when sound in cinema was still relatively new. The camera moves around with a fluidity that is startling for an older film, and the highlight of the film for me is a harrowing first-person scene (from the coffin) of being buried alive. There are many disorienting effects used involving shadows, backwards filming, and double-exposures that add to the creepy yet somehow artistic effect. Directed by Carl Theodor Dryer, who went on to direct the acclaimed "The Passion of Joan of Arc". 4 out of 5 stars.

Watched remake of "The Crazies" again last night, Radha Mitchell, Murderous zombie-like town folk, government cover up, plague like symptoms....did I mention Radha Mitchell? Oh, I did? Ok, well, she's rather easy on the eyes....

I had to look up a picture of Radha....she is a cutie.

Damn. That sounded good, too. I've spent the last three nights watching the BBC tv horror show, THE FADES. Genuinely good horror, good effects, well-acted and complete storyline. Sad that it wasn't renewed for a second season. Today is my annual FRANKENSTEIN/DRACULA marathon--the classic Universal films and their spin-offs (BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, SON OF FRANKENSTEIN, etc.)

31. Pet Semetary (1989) – Whoever wrote this was sick and twisted. Fantastic horror movie that still holds up well after 24 years. Steve wrote the screenplay and the movie has a great pace and is creepy as hell throughout. On the dvd, there is some bonus material and a featurette with Stephen King. I think he was probably close to Joe Hill’s age when this was shot. Stephen looks a lot like Joe in this featurette. 10/10.

30. Halloween (2007)

Rob Zombie's remake of the classic. I had only seen this one once before and remember being pretty critical of it. But, I didn't mind it so much this time around. It still doesn't match up with the original, Michael isn't quite as scary to me in the remake. Still plenty scary, though...I just can't put my finger on why. And I seem to remember that the music was a little different, a little "minor" but I didn't notice that this time either. Maybe I'm remembering the remake of the second movie.

I have The Revenant recorded. I was going to watch the original Halloween today, but don't know if I can do it alone, even in the day time. Maybe I will watch that instead.

33) The Wicker Man(2006)--A sheriff investigating the disappearance of a young girl from a small island discovers there's a larger mystery to solve among the island's secretive, neo-pagan community.~ IMDb........my first time watching......I guess it was alright, kinda creepy but not as scary as I thought it would be. Fearness Factor: 4 Suspense Factor: 8

34) The Satanic Rites of Dracula(1973)-starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing-Lee stars as Count Dracula, who fronts a satanic cult that uses a research establishment and real estate business as a cover for its dastardly deeds.~dvd description.......my first time watching....I liked this one! Even though it's old, I like the way it was filmed and Lee and Cushing did a pretty good job.


So I'm hoping to get at least one more movie in today...hopefully I can log back in here later.

Mad Monster Party? (1967). This is an animated film from Rankin/Bass Productions, the folks who gave us Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and all those others half-hour Christmas shows from the 1960s. I never even knew this movie existed until the other day. It's not very good and was pretty torturous to watch but it was neat in a way because it featured the voices of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller.

I just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed participating in this movie marathon. I've never been involved in any type of marathon in my entire life until now. It was fun reading everyone's reviews and I now have a long list of movies to see based on your posts. Happy Halloween!

This is my third one and it's always a blast. This was the first time I got to 30. I think I was around 20 the previous two years. The ability to stream movie helps a lot.
