This little bit of King's writing made me laugh right out loud.

'Finally, a kid driving a Chevette not much bigger than a sardine can pulled over, and Carune got in. "What you got in the bag, my man?"

"Bunch of dead mice," Carune said. Eventually another car stopped. When the farmer behind the wheel asked about the bag, Carune told him it was a couple of sandwiches.'

That little exchange reminded me of something from years ago. My wife and were just dating and we were headed out to a place I liked to go in Lakewood, Washington called Engine House 9, to meet some friends. The road to it from my place in Steilacoom passed Western State Hospital, which was a mental hospital. As we were driving along, we noticed a man standing across the street from Western, trying to thumb a ride. He was middle-aged (like me now), wearing a black suit and neck-tie, white shirt, shiny black shoes. He had a wild beard and shaggy hair, and an un-nerving grin on his face. But the kicker was that he had taken his suit pants off and draped them over his left arm while he thumbed with the right.

"Think he'll get a ride?" I asked her.

The Jaunt is one of about 3 SK short stories that knocked me flat on my butt when I first read it. It shocked the hell out of me. And stuck with me for weeks after.

Then again, when I read "I Am The Doorway" I didn't get it out of my head for about a year. Yikes. The little yarn disturbed me more than anything I ever read. And it was delicious!

Me too. I love that story, ever so creepy, scary.
