I've always loved SK's little "narrator asides" his little "breaking the 4th wall" moments. I just read this again for only the second time. There's a section where he pulls one of these snarky narrator moments and says something to the effect of, "use the old standby 'the living dark'". (not a direct accurate quote) Then shortly thereafter he drops it right in. There's a conversational humor to that that I've always enjoyed about his work.
On the other hand, he uses the phrase, "run(s) like tallow" too many times to describe the affects of Charlie's powers on whatever. It strikes me as being a little too, "use this description keep moving!"
There's another writer, William C. Dietz (military sci-fi), that constantly uses, "warm buttery glow" anytime he describes light coming from a building or the like.
Does stuff like this get on anyone else's nerves?

...depends on my mood at the time of the reading, and whether the text is illuminated by Arc Sodium Lights....

The central message of virtually every movie I saw in the '80s.

All you have to do is "believe in yourself."

Whatever that means.
