Sounds a lot like how I felt the first time I read the revised version. But the more I keep thinking about the growth of the character in other changes I'm okay with it. I tell ya though, before I sat down calmly and pondered over it for a long long time, book 7 made me so mad I nearly threw it out the window. But that's one of the reasons I like his writing so much ... because it does draw me in so deeply that I actually do get mad at the characters and the things they do :)

And in my opinion ... Han shot first and he's always shot first ever since the first time I saw that movie as a kid :) I choose to ignore that particular revision lol.
Han shot ONLY--lol. (Did I tell you I have a SuperNerd badge? ;D)

The thing that made me want to throw book 7 at the wall is
SK including himself in the story.
I HATED that, and I always will. The end delighted me!

Lol ... ok he shot only :) I'll agree with ya there.

I actually kind of liked the spoilery part you mentioned there. The ending is what got me. I mean I'd been reading these books since there were only 3 (and 3 was fairly new at that point if I remember correctly) and it felt like forever and ever to finally get 4. Then waiting and waiting for the rest was pure agony. and Then ...

After waiting for eons and eternities to finally finish the journey and find out just what the heck was behind that door ... it got flipped back to the freaking beginning :a17::confusion::hammer:

But I'm okay with it now (for the most part lol) ... I just have to get determined enough to be okay with it a second time around :heheh:

I thought the ending was perfect...I know many were upset and not liking it,but it really was the only logical ending..I went on that long journey, years and years, and then at the end, found it to be the only way it could have been an ending.Tears and happiness, just for me..

mjs9153 - totally agree. Read as published, stood on that mono forever and felt the ending was as it was meant to be.
Ka is a wheel
Read it during one of the major tropical storms of that year. Only desire was to complete the journey before being blown away.

I realized that it was meant to be that way eventually and that it really couldn't have been done any other way ... but at that moment that I read that last sentence ... I was inconsolable

Pretty sure it was the original one (I will go have a look!)

Okay - I have two copies - a small one that says 'first Signet printing July 1989' [copyright 1982] and the second one is larger with color illustrations by Michael Whelan first Plume Printing, September 1988 (it is a first edition, for whatever that is worth).

I will have to keep an eye out for the original 1982 one at the Value Village - who knows? - maybe I will get lucky!
:untroubled:
I found one of the true Grant editions at Value Village- it is a second printing and it's an ex-library copy but it's a beautiful book and it only cost me $2.99! ;-D

That is Amazing! I'd love to get my hands on one of them. I found my Plume Michael Whelan copy in this awesome used bookstore nearby and they were the last of the used bookstores around here. Sadly it has since closed down and turned into an Army Surplus store.

I'm just curious if there are others out there who have read this book multiple times? I've lost count of how many times I've read it. And every time I fly anywhere I read it again (or The Drawing of the Three because well ... airplane lol).

I'd say I've read it at least a dozen times over the years ... and it never gets old

Whew. I thought I was going to have to beat myself. I started a thread after you on what book have you read the most and then I see this, but at least you are asking about only one book, so I don't feel so dumb!;;D

I have read The Gunslinger once. I've read the whole series once. But, I do feel I need to re-read the whole thing again. So much my old brain has forgotten!

I've read the Gunslinger 4 times, drawing 2x, waste lands 3x, 4-6 2x. and all on audiobook. I flip flip on D7. God did I want it to be something GREAT, but sadly it wasn't. Love Roland more than any character in any story in any media format. Roland is the man.

Probably 7 or 8 times, and I finally liked it this last time :) I have a copy of each (original and revised), and there's something to be said for each. The original is definitely rougher, and has far more adverbs than the revised (lol), but I found the revision of the fight in Tully in the revised to be a cockadoodie cheat, right up there with Lucas' revision of the Han/Greedo kerfuffle. It was a fundamental change to Roland's character in that story, and it will never sit right with me. For that reason, I'll wade through a sea of adverbs to maintain that kernel of character truth.

I agree. I enjoy both versions, but the original still seems stronger in regards to characters even if the revision is stronger in so far as technique. Of the seven books, my favorite is Drawing of the Three which I have read more than any other (and I have never kept count). If I had to guess, I'm sure I've read them all at least five or six times and book one and two at least ten times.

I wish that someone would start a poll. (I don't know how to do it)

I am just curious.

'Have you read the Dark Tower series?
yes, no, will, wanted to' -
or something along those lines.

To answer the question - Gunslinger just twice. Re-read again after I finished the series.

The rest of the books? Many. I seem to be always picking one up and reading parts of them.
