I just watched Children of the Corn on Hulu, and I must say, when I first watched it, as a kid, I really liked it, I felt like it was scary. When I got a little older and read the work it was derived from, I felt like it wasn't true to the story. Then I read that maybe SK wasn't so thrilled about it either ( the version with Linda Hamilton...) and liked another, more truer version. So I got my hands on and watched that version, and I enjoyed it's loyalty to the story, but liked the one that wasn't as true to the story more somehow.

Rewatching the one with Linda Hamilton on Hulu today, I must say, although it isnt as true to the story as I thought it could have been, as a stand alone story, I did enjoy it. When I say standalone, I mean, if it wasn't a SK movie and I didn't have the expectation that it live up to his work, I would think it's just scary enough.

The scariest thing is the creepy little old man preacher child. I was raised in a place in Alabama not too unlike the creepy little town of Gatlin and I think what really freaks me out the most is that I visited a number of places as creepy as Gatlin.

The religious zeal is creepy enough alone, without all the evil little kids.

...trapped in the middle of nowhere with the Crazy Christers! Oooohhh Spooky.

I remember watching it in the 80s and it was terrifying - especially Isaac and Malachai. Then I watched it with my younger children not too long ago - they are 11 and 13 - they laughed at the end with the silly graphics. Times have changed.

I let them watch Silver Bullet, and that did scare them.

I recently re-watched The Dead Zone - that was scary and sad. That is probably one of my favorite movies based on a King novel.

I'm gonna lay it down straight right here--of all the King flicks that came out in the eighties (when I was a kid and still COULD be scared by a flick), that first C of the C scared the crap out of me. Living in northern Indiana, yer surrounded by field corn, and the thought of killer creep kids popping out of those rows with butcher knives and slitting yer throat--especially super-creepy kids like damn Issac and Malakay (where did they find such weird looking kids?)--well, sir, that flick terrified me. All that throat slitting and meat grinding...ugh.

Oh, and dig; we gotta a lotta Amish around here, and they go to school with us 'English' kids in elementary; now, I don't mean to offend any of our Amish members (heh heh, get it?), and lord knows I had plenty of Amish friends over the years, but after viewing Corn I couldn't help comparing them to the evil kids in the movie. Same style of dress, same basic beliefs. There were two or three who looked EXACTLY like Malakay running around our school.

All kidding aside, I still find the basic concept of the story terrifying.

I don't think I've seen the other version... but the original film with Linda Hamilton was appropriately creepy to me growing up. There was just something about the whole coffee shop scene with blood spattering in the kids milkshake. I'll have to look for the other one though.
