...as the Rat of Musk said, that's how they do it at Hard Case....if you look at any of the "hard boiled" fiction of the past, there was usually a hot "dame" on the cover, but it didn't necessarily have anything to do with the content-but everything to do with making a sale....

Indeed. And for all you PC zombies--it's not sexist, it's called nostalgia.

gotcha. does Stephen king ever have any input on the covers oristhat just strictly publisher or artist?
He often, but not always, has final approval rights. Most of the time he goes along with what the artist has come up with and other times he makes suggestions or nixes it altogether. As others above have said, this sort of cover was typical of the detective/crime
style of novel and that's what they were going for. He loved it (and the one for Joyland which is in the same style) BTW. :smile2:

I absolutely love both of them, too.
People who are unfamiliar with the noir/pulp fiction genre (which the Hard Case Crime imprint is riffing on) should realize that most of the time the covers of the original novels didn't have much if anything to do with the content. They were purely to get some guy's attention at the drugstore or train station. And that they did!

...I just wish the "woman in a bikini" cover wasn't such a high priced commodity-it is a great example of the genre....

Medical Transcriptionist? She was a journalism intern at a newspaper.... Color me confused lol

And just my humble opinion but to add to the discussion...I think that is supposed to be Stephanie on the cover. Although there is no connection to the plot per say, she is holding a voice recorder with a microphone. Like the ones journalists use to interview people. So they made her look sexed-up to sell books, but there is a somewhat connection the the book.

No problem-- new member often continue older threads. Feel free to jump in. As stated above, most Hard Case Crime books had that type of cover-- sexy females, often not directly associated with the story; or overly exaggerated in dress.
