Episode 3 Other Voices Other Rooms

Ok, this is the first episode I didn't care for. I guess messing with the time travel/Derry timeline didn't bother me, but I'm bothered about the differences in Jodie (so far). And I don't like Bill being there but I get that Jake needs a companion so he's not just self narrating all the time.

Except for Miz Mimi, I like what they've done there.

Yeah, this one seemed to be a kind of transition episode - get the Dallas/jfk plot started and establish the jake/Sadie relationship. To be fair though, this is where the book seems to slow down also (at least for me).

It's a bit weird having bill as his number 2 but I guess one guy doing surveillance doesn't make good TV. Also, I understand that it frees up jake to do more things in a shorter time frame.

Making mimi younger and black is OK too, it allows the show to touch on the racial segregation back then (which king does touch on in the book), and with time constraints they were never really going to fit in deke and mimi's retired relationship and end of life story. It really puts into perspective just how much is going on in the book - you might think it's just about time travel and saving kennedy, but that turns out to be one of many sub plots of what is basically a love story....

....speaking of which, I think the woman who plays Sadie is doing a good job so far, she may not be how I imagined her (given King's emphasis on her being tall and clumsy) but so far she seems true enough to the book character.

I know James Franco gets a bit of stick around here (I'd never even heard of him before this) but I think he's doing a great job so far. The guy who plays Al is really good too.

Greetings all! First time on site and barely getting into the SK universe, I've read a couple of dark tower books, the stand, etc. From a Buick 8 was my first taste of SK and I'm hooked! Still have many books to go, but really dig what he has created and that his son has dabbled in it as well. I like the series so far and Mimi character was a brilliant move and did anyone notice the name of the gas station? Fannin..as in Randall Flagg? What's up with the white panel truck? Any other references? I feel like a fiend, I catch myself doing searching for SK everyday! Haha

Another good episode. The young woman playing Sadie is just...radiant, is the only word I can think of. I expect to see much more of her in the future. It's nice to see that Franco is still taking it seriously--it's abundantly clear that he cares about this project. I can't figure out what the heck accent the guy playing Oswald is attempting, but it's bad--lol. I'm not crazy about Bill, but I understand that it makes sense to give Jake a sidekick so he's not talking to himself constantly :) I'm looking forward to the next ep.

Ha ha, that was my reaction too. He certainly sounds nothing like Lee from the archive footage I've heard of him.

Daniel Webber is Australian so that might explain his attempt at the dialect not quite hitting the mark. ;)

The weird accent reminds me of how Charlie Hunnan speaks...a mix of a bunch of influences and dialects.
His accent made me giggle in SOA :) It was like he was attempting a Southie accent, which would have been fine if the show was set in Boston. Didn't quite make sense when he was supposed to be a born & raised Californian. He did a bit better in Pacific Rim, I thought.

The first time I heard him speak in an interview, out of character, I did a double take!

He did better with the Southern accent in Cold Mountain. I can't remember which actor I was watching in an interview who said that a Southern accent is the easiest for UK actors--something about it having a lot of the same long vowels and soft consonants as different UK dialects.

I really liked this episode a lot. Franco was at his least smug, and I enjoyed the interplay between him and Sadie. They really effectively sold the romance.

Miz Mimi was one of my favorite characters in the book, and I liked the expanded role she played in the miniseries. Between her gas station and coffee scenes, the Confederate rally, and the downstairs neighbors teasing Jake and Bill as being gay, this episode wove racism through the narrative, showing that hatred is as timeless as anything else.

Bill is also an intriguing presence; I noticed his sympathy for Marina, and I wonder if that's something that will cause a problem down the line.

All in all, a good episode, and I'm ready for next week.

Glad I'm not the only one scratching my head about the Oswald accent. Maybe he's overthinking it, after all Oswald did just get back from a place where he was speaking Russian for 2 years, but still, it's distracting, makes him sound like he's tongue-tied or something. And he looks absolutely nothing like Oswald, even the hair color is just wrong. The first real disappointment of the series for me.

I can see why they needed a sidekick from a narrative information standpoint, but it does deflate a lot of the tension that was in the original story, and takes away from the precariousness of changing the past. If the past doesn't want to be changed, then why was it so easy to tell and convince the guy he was from the past and trying to prevent JFK's assassination? I'm okay with changes from the original story, but they still should make sense within the logical boundaries the new story has created, so a bit of a slip there, in my opinion.

Still, it's a very enjoyable series, they really nailed the seedy look of Oswald's neighborhood, pretty much how I imagined it as I was reading! And though I'll never look at this TV Sadie as the real Sadie, I'm rooting for their relationship to work out!

First of all, loving it and I love that they are treading new ground and making it different (but not obscenely different). However, I did find the fact they made Mimi black odd in the context of the series. I abhore racism and I think the woman playing her is a great actress (I almost teared up a bit at the gas station scene), but as a history student I find myself ever so slightly confused about how well the students and teachers seem to have treated Mimi, considering it's set in Texas when segregation was still in place. However, we may see more about that in the coming episodes so I hope I am proved wrong!
