The Dark Tower Set Photos: Idris Elba Is The Gunslinger
Jake's mother has a role? Am I the only one who doesn't remember who 'Timmy' is?

Whether or not Jake's mother has substantial role is not clear yet, only rumor. It wouldn't shock me, however, as they have fundamentally changed nearly every character and backstory so far. Since they appear to be going the Excalibur route with Jake, i.e. making him the crux of reality and saving the world, it would mean that they will tie Roland to the boy in backstory. Somehow they will have a previous connection, perhaps when Jake was an infant this version of the Gunslinger was part of hiding him in our world. Who knows; it is all very disquieting to me. If they do go that route, sort of a Harry Potter under the stairs direction, it will mean that Jake's mother will have to be a part of it or explained. This is all conjecture, of course, but all very tried and tired Hollywood approaches. Still, we don't know who the newest actress has been tapped to play, and she went out of her way to cover up her character's name. That is odd. Why would she do that? They haven't been shy about any of their other characters. That, in my opinion, doesn't bode well at all. The only reason to do it is because it promises to be a storm of reaction from fans of the book.

Off the top of my head, I remember no character of the importance by the name of Timmy. Jake did make a friend in Wolves of the Calla but his name isn't Timmy. I suppose I could be forgetting some minor person mentioned in The Wastelands briefly as talking to Jake. Whomever is writing this story seems to love grabbing minor, walk on characters and blowing them up into major ones. I suspect this is because they feel unconstrained by the source material in doing so. If such a one paragraph character doesn't exist in the books, it is clear they mean to create one.

I hate to be Mr. Negative, but in all honesty the more I read/hear about this film the less enthusiastic I become. And it is difficult as is for me to build up enthusiasm about anything that comes out of Hollywood these days.

Tiny, the EW story confirmed that this movie is NOT strictly by the book. It is a sequel of sorts--Roland ' s next shot at the tower. As such they have a lot of leeway for what might happen. Some events might turn out to be keystones, unchangeable from quest to quest ( like Roland chasing the man in black across the desert ), but I'd bet that not every event is like that. We know that things can change from quest to quest because he had the horn at the beginning of his next run, but it was lost in the book story. I'm getting a little curious--if they couldn't film the books as is (and that would have been difficult and costly ), I'm glad it's another quest entirely.

As skimom noted the movie is more of a sequel than a direct adaptation ie Roland has the Horn of Eld this time.

As to how the first movie relates to the books, this EW article maps it out:
The Dark Tower: How the movie draws from 8 novels | EW.com

Basically the first movie is going to set up Roland, Martin, Jake, and what the Dark Tower represents. Plus establishing the Taheen as the Stormtroopers for the series. Eddie and Susannah will show up in the second movie and are only referenced by Tarot Cards.

That is quite a lot to establish for non-readers in a first movie. The film has a relatively small budget of around 68 million. I speculate the budget will increase if the first movie is a success. The budget is also why we won't see things like Oy and why much of the first movie takes place in our world.

Seems like a solid and sensible approach. I'm liking the images that have been released quite a lot. Filming has just wrapped too.

Exciting!

I hope we get the scene of Roland in Tull and its eventual demise at his hands. I'd love to see that.

My understanding is we will get some form of it.

I'm very happy for the information in all the EW articles (bit surprised that it's so much!). It clears up a lot of questions for the fans, and I think it's just enough so people can make up their minds up front about whether they want to see it or not. Me, I had my qualms when Ron Howard's initial plan of movies & TV series (they had pegged Javier Bardem for Roland back then) got squashed, as I couldn't really see it working any other way except for a long form cable TV adaptation (like Game of Thrones). But the moment SK released the Last Time Around tweet, I knew what it meant and now I'm very excited for this. Plus, despite the naysayers, I think Elba will do a splendid job as Roland.

Interesting that McConaughey was initially being considered for Randall Flagg in Josh Boone's The Stand movie, but he went with this role instead. He's a fantastic choice for Walter/Flagg.

It certainly an elegant approach much like the recent Star Trek reboot from 2009. In both cases all the existing continuity stays unchanged while the movies can tell their story as they best see fit.

Interesting tidbit because the rights for the Dark Tower and The Stand are owned by different studios, McConaughey cannot be referred to as Randall Flagg. It's much like the situation that exists with Marvel and Fox over the X-Men universe. Still blows my mind that Sony worked out an agreement to share Spiderman with Marvel.

Precisely. As a Classic Trek fan, I love the "conceit" of the alternate timeline. I can enjoy the "boy band" version of the new series in the comfort of knowing it undoes nothing of the mythology I love. Same with this book. This is Roland's final journey, like it or not. We really don't know how things will play out, despite reading all the books. That is what makes it so interesting to me.

As for the Sony-Marvel deal, I am not surprised. Sony messed up every Spidey film from the third Raimi outing onwards. They clearly don't have the creative talent to do what Marvel does, and I'm glad the character is now in the MCU proper. As I keep telling people, if Kevin Feige can turn Guardians of the Galaxy (characters so obscure that even a Marvel fan like me didn't care about the comics back in the 80s) and Ant-Man (the Scott Lang iteration, no less) into hit films, that guy should be given carte blanche to do whatever the heck he pleases.

The Tower is closer now, and I am so eager to begin my final journey with Roland.
