I read a short story about a million years ago by this title, and I've convinced myself over the millennia that SK was the author. It was the final story in a collection of horror by various authors. I seem to have vague recollections of seeing a movie adaptation, too, but maybe the story was just extremely descriptive and vivid. Does anyone know if it has appeared in any of King's collections?

I have a question about the short story "The Crate." Cemetery Dance, I believe, is publishing the story in a book series that is called Shivers (not sure if I am correct on the name). Will the collection in which it will appear eventually be sold in a cheaper paperback version? Two stories I always wanted to read over the years were "Weeds" and "The Crate." I got to purchase from Cemetery Dance an anthology that contained "Weeds" -- and the story was great -- at a good price and I was wondering if anyone knew if the one that contains "The Crate" will come out in a cheaper version (and how long that takes). Thank you.

It was published in a collection called the Arbor House Treasury of Horror and the Supernatural in the early 80s (and SK wrote a lengthy intro). I actually have a hard cover copy of this book I bought when it was released. As far as I know, it's the only book the story ever appeared in until the Cemetery Dance publication. By the way, this is an excellent collection. It's a huge book and probably out of print.

I just located the book and looked at the publishing date and it is 1981. Was this published before the movie Creepshow or after?

Edit - I'll answer my own question. Creepshow was released in 1982 so this story existed in print before the movie was released. Also, as Dana Jean pointed out, it was published in a magazine before this book.

I recall seeing this movie in Kingston Ontario while being a new recruit in the military

What a great show! I loved the movie

We've (the SKMB members) talked about wanting a collection of SK's introductions to books other than his own (and other essays) and the introduction in this book would certainly make the list to be included in such a collection.

Fljoe, you just brought back a lot of memories. Would you believe I actually almost purchased that book years ago? Can't recall why I did not, but I didn't (at least, I'm fairly sure I did not; maybe I did and subsequently lost the book, I don't know, but I doubt it). I can remember looking at the table of contents in a mall bookstore that no longer exists.

I had forgotten about this book, so perhaps I will either buy it used or see if it is at a library. Sometimes I don't like ordering used books because I fear the condition it will be in (I have a germ phobia, and I hate when weird stuff is on a book; which, I should also point out, makes it difficult for me to check out library books too; oftentimes, if there is no choice, I do it but clean the covers down with an alcohol wipe, which I hope is okay to do). But I have to say, the fact that you say it is a good collection intrigues me, so I will look into this. Thanks again.

I wrote an opinion piece for my local newspaper years ago about library books. It was great. I got a book and when I opened the pages, I think a human body of ashes fell out of it. Obviously the person before me was a smoker.

OR, good God! Maybe this book was dear old dead Alice's favorite story and her daughter spread her ashes in it! yikesssss. didn't even think of that.
