I know what you mean. He'd had me type a bit of Desperation and then the first few pages of The Regulators a while after that and I thought he'd given me the wrong ones to type. Was scratching my head thinking these are the same people but he explained it when I asked if I he'd given me the wrong manuscript pages. ;-D
WOW I'm speechless (bow down) we are not worthy! :a24: Do love both Desperation and Regulators but I'll understand them better now I've read DT. Much respect to you!

First worked on assignment for a month as a Kelly Girl temp in 1986 and then came to work for him in November 1988 and yes, lots of benefits along with the salary including a pension plan which I hope to make use of in 3 years and 10 months, but who's counting?
If you don't mind me asking...did he choose you, do you think, because you weren't a huge fan (at that time)? Does he ever ask for your advice on women characters, for example, the same way he asks for Tabby's opinion? I bet you could tell a thousand stories about working for him.

I've always had a soft spot for Desperation. It was the first King book I purchased, so it started my collection! It definitely grabs you by the short and curlies from the get go, and just keeps pulling the punches until you find yourself given the old bum rush out the door at the end. You want to get up, brush yourself off, and mutter under your breath that you'll never wander back in there again....but you will.

To be honest, I'm not sure if it was him or his personal assistant at the time who suggested having me come back and be on staff. I'd kept in touch after I did the Kelly Girl assignment and he had been happy with the work I'd done, so either way he would have been the one to give the thumbs up.

I don't remember being asked about advice on characters but there have been other things I've helped with by doing research or answering questions like what's the name of a blue wildflower.

There are a lot of stories but there won't ever be any memoir of my time working for the Kings. :smile2:

Thanks for responding. I just happened to wonder about it as I was reading this old thread and you were discussing retirement. My mind went back to 1992 when you answered my fan letter and one thing led to another.
I wouldn't want you to reveal anything personal about the Kings, I was just thinking you must have funny stories to tell. Something like, "Hey, there was this one time the dog got out and we all had to chase it around the yard." Or "Steve gave me a box of chocolates for my birthday one year but I was on a diet and couldn't eat them." Like that.
Anyway, thanks again and I hope you are doing well. :)

Ahhh, gotcha. Along the lines of his telling me every day not to let my water break all over his white carpet because I was 8 months pregnant when I was doing the Kelly Girl assignment? ;-D
