I'm a bit confused. Reffering to page 179, which I've just reached; Eddie Parks' daughter was killed by a driver 'yakking on the phone'. Was this possible? Considering Eddies wife died 20 years previously to the story which takes place in '73? The car phone was first used in '46 but what what are the chances?

Probably not high, but not impossible. Roll with it, baby (and welcome :D)

I think they were around but really expensive and huge. There is a movie with Jack Lemon called Save The Tiger that was made in the 70s and he has a car phone in the movie. It doesn't look portable.

Well - considering it's King, it plausible that Joyland was in some other when - which makes all of our logical ways non-existent. I've been journeying through the Dark Tower series for a while now, so maybe I'm the only thinking this. Just enjoy the ride. It doesn't have to make sense ;);) and welcome to the SKMB.

Let's see now - that is one ringy dingy, two ringy dingies...

When it comes to Stephen King books, throw reality out the window and just "go with the flow" - you'll feel better if you just immerse yourself in the story!

Car phones were a reality "back then." The average joe certainly did not have one, but they were around.

I know - the person yacking on the phone was using a wind up field telephone - they had those in the 50s (probably bought at an Army Surplus store) - use your imagination

Okay - so that is one with cheese, two Cokes...

Hi, I think you're one of the only people who realised I was talking about the 50s and not the 70s or 80s...I'm sure he was driving with one of these on the passenger seat!!!

Hi, thanks everyone for your responses, but by caculations we're talking about a car phone in the 50s, not the 70s or 80s...I still maintain the Mr King went of to make a cup of coffee in the middle of that paragraph and forgot what decade he was talking about! or not. I'm about to start 'It'...wish me luck, you might not see me for a long time.
