Humans in general are panicky animals, especially when the lights go out and the water stops flowing from the tap. That was the cool thing about One Second After. I thought the author did a good job on that aspect of the book. Did you say the sequel wasn't quite as good?
I only read about 1/3 of it--just couldn't get into it at all. Now that I read the first one and enjoyed it, though, I might try again.

The woods are lovely dark and deep
Finally finished Freedom of the Mask by McCammon. I was a lot distracted and had trouble concentrating but then was able to buckle down and enjoy! It ended
with a very strong indication of at least one more story to tell. YEA

I am now back to completing Hitler and Dracula and then on to Mississippi Blood.
Actually it is Dracula vs. Hitler. :icon_eek:

I recently finished Delta Wedding by Eudora Welty and now I have a bookmark bisecting my paperback copy of Cold Sassy Tree. Also, I am reading The Iowa Baseball Confederacy by W.P. Kinsella. His books are filled with magic, wonder and the milk of human kindness. He writes, in so many ways, of each man's quest to find significance and true purpose in the world. Kinsella was an inveterate optimist and believed in stoking the fire in every dreamer's heart. What greater endowment can a writer give his readers than this tiny seed of faith, whispering, "If you build it, he will come."
If you dream it, it will come. (Yeah, I can gush about this man all day.)
Next, I think I'm going to start The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Havent read anything for a long while due to sickness. You know that you are ill when you read a word and then the next but the brain can't make sense of the words. Nasty. So i'm starting slow with a reread of one of Ellery Queens better efforts, Cat Of Many Tails. I'm gonna curl down with the book and something to nibble on and a glass of something energizing by my side. Thats my friday evening!

You've convinced me to try a new-to-me author: Welty :) I loved Cold Sassy Tree, both the book and the movie. The Secret History is very interesting! I hope you like it.

....I feel like a snail!...y'all burn through books at warp speed, while I just plod along.....then again, I usually read anymore when I go to bed......
As long as you're reading, you're doing better than something like 60% of Americans. I read that statistic (that 60% of American adults don't read after they finish schooling) and it made me sad for them.

I bonded so quickly to the characters in Delta Wedding (don't know which of her books you'll choose first but this one was remarkable) and Welty's prose begs to be read aloud; I posted a few quotes in the Book Quotes thread. I have her novel Losing Battles in my TBR pile. I think I will like The Secret History since I enjoyed The Goldfinch.

I still have about five stories to finish in Night Shift (I'm leaving the last that John D MacDonald said was his favorite till last) I haven't read any of the stories for about four or five years. I recently read Neccesity by Brian Garfield. I didn't like the ending. I have never read Death Wish, so I'm going to read that in about two months. Death Wish, the movie, is brilliant. I'm trying to read all the books that were made into movies that I haven't read. I read Six Days of the Condor about six weeks ago and the Marathon Man about a month ago, and Rising Sun about two weeks ago. I will also read Carrie(I have read Carrie about twice before but I'm going through King's stuff chronologically) after I finish Night Shift. I also been reading New Dawn magazine.

I had a review book posted to me that I didn't request (hopeful publicity departments do that sometimes), but I thought I'd give it a look. So far, I like it a lot! Inside V, by Paula Primos. I'm not sure if my NYJB editor will post my review (as it wasn't requested from their system), but I'll sure try, as long as the book doesn't tank in the second half. Reminds me a bit of Presumed Innocent.
