no wait, yes- i just finished listening to W&G and for the first time in 4 treks to the tower , i heard the but where our ka tet end up in Topeka from the stand- the bit were they find the message on the car to mother abigail!
Now - if the rumour is true, and the stand is getting a 'last time around' treatment - how cool would it be if the new group actually joins the east west fight for a little bit?

yeh !

yeh?

...anyone?

What are the odds that HBO eventually tries to do an actual adaptation? It is clear that is the only way it is ever going to have a good chance at a faithful translation. I will go waste my money on this "last time around" version and might even like some of it. I would still love to see someone who respects the work to take a crack at it.

Way more interested in seeing IT. That looks great. This looks.....well, non inspiring in any way. As others said, it looks like a CGI fest, dumbed down action flick. I don't want to soil my love for the books.

I was so excited to see this trailer, and to me, like many of you, it looks like a worth-while *movie.* NOT a faithful adaptation of the book series, but just a movie. I made my husband watch it, interested to see his reaction as an "outsider" who knows nothing of the books. He's your basic video-gaming, D&D-playing, superhero-loving nerd, and he was a fan. He wants to see it, and so do I.

Stephen's own reaction to the trailer:

The Dark Tower: Stephen King's Favorite Easter Egg and Hopes for the Future of the Series - IGN

Too bad we won't see Eddie, Susannah and Oy yet.

Even if it's not a totally faithful adaptation, I'll be happy if it's just a good film. I think fantasy remains real tricky to do right - we're used to a high standard now after the Lord of the Rings films and Game of Thrones, but even with a big budget and A-list stars it can still go the way of something like Seventh Son if it goes wrong.

It's probably blasphemy to admit here that the Dark Tower novels are not my favorite SK works (I feel like the series hit it's peak with The Wastelands, which I absolutely loved BTW), mainly due to the last 3 installments. However, I certainly respect the time and work that SK had to put in to complete it, and people's love of the series. A topic for another post I guess.

As someone who is not the biggest DT fan, I think the trailer makes this look pretty badass.

I am not a big DT fan and I agree with you. I think I've said as much on these boards. The Wastelands is the best, I think. The books took a markedly strong turn after book four. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, either, because for such a long journey there must be surprises and the story should rocket to the next destination. Wolves definitely propels the reader into the next phase (level) of the story.

Right? And it's not that I didn't enjoy reading them, it's just that my enthusiasm dampened as the series went on. When I was a bit younger, I used to get aggravated that it seemed like every novel released after a certain point (Needful Things maybe?) just had to tie in to the DT mythos in some way. I'm glad to say that I've since softened my stance on that viewpoint...

They all add to a great feel - not too crazy about the stronger than most line. Roland is a man with a particular skill set, not a superman.

My husband (pretty much oblivious to SK except for the very obvious stuff out there) and I were watching the basketball playoffs last night and saw 2 commercials for the movie. Both times I stopped my husband from what he was saying so I could watch. The first time he watched and said nothing the second time he asked, "Did you read the book?" after the commercial ended. I didn't feel like schooling him in the DT series so I just said, "Books. Yes." The commercials did nothing for me (a constant reader) or him, which I find more important an audience as that is who they need to capture, the non-SK fans.

The movie looks 'good' but the 'dream-quality' didn't transfer to the trailer [the Tullen characters are of a shadowy place that I think some of us know, as if we have been there ourselves at night, at least once, or a place pretty darn similar to it...]; but I don't 'normally' go to movie theaters, anyhow; they are too loud!! And there are too many snotty nose kids running around and being bothersome!! and cost me about $20 bucks in gas, just to show up outside the main doors...I think I will be purchasing more of the S. King's novels instead, with my monies, and avoid all that theatrical noise, and save some gas; with my dog resting curled up nearby (an active read beats passive video/audio absorption any day, anyhow).
