i'm a tradesman. i've worked in the hard/skilled trades as long as i've been a working adult. literally. i weld, now. i airtight fireboxes and other parts on gas stoves (the heating kind, not the cooking kind)

that is at my core, who i am.

but i am also a craftsman. and listening to SK recount the journey of writing the series i just finished, The Dark Tower, through journal entries, as well as simply hearing the title "on writing", something clicked.

and well... the wind began to blow after so many years of being ignored. blow? no, that's the wrong word. it's a mixture of gusts and flurries.

i'm listening to the audiobook of on writing right now (paused so i could devote my attention to writing this post, of course).

i want to pursue writing and self-publishing as a hobby. and i'm gonna do just that.

i've been handwriting (which i need to transcribe) in my downtime between boxes of parts at work, during my carpool home, and then doing the typing once i get home.

so far i'm about 5 pages in, and i had the eureka moment a bit after lunch of the situation that is at the core of not only this story, but several others all of which are tied together.

and as long as i keep going as a pace that works for me ( and put the pen down or hit 'ctrl s' when the words cease flow), this should come together.

Howdy saiyris! It's nice to hear. If you write what you know it could catch on. I think there has always been a glut in welding fiction! "The air smelled of oxygen and acetylene but I was headed for migger things!". All the best, mal.
hey! i am in fact writing what i know. that is the basis of the first story (i have discovered several 'fossils' if you've read 'on writing' you'll get the reference), and it does involve those very things! as a matter of fact, would you mind if i used that very quote (i'll re-word it likely) as the prompt for one of the later scenes? because i read it and actually saw a scene that's a few chapters out, if i'm feeling the timing right. time moves oddly when you're feeling out a story. hmmm... roland and his ka'tet would nod in understanding.

Hey saiyris! You can use any part or all with my blessing and no credit necessary. That's something you would have written yourself whereas I was just trying to make something sound 'weldy'. Good luck! Your enthusiasm is contagious!

King has a tendency to do that. While all the kids in 3rd grade were reading Hardy Boys books and Choose Your Own Adventures, I was reading The Shining, much to the horror and dismay of my teacher.
Steve corrupted me way back then. It's a good thing.

an update: just last night i posted my first fan fiction i've ever been able to finish on my guild's (world of warcraft) blog, and this morning, during my writing session, the manuscript i'm working on broke the 10k word count.

i have never previously breached even 1000 words. and today i hit the 10k mark. i'm quite proud of myself.

Third grade? That's gotta be a new record. Usually it's around fifth. But my fifth grade teacher was cooler than your third. Impressed rather than dismayed lol.

Even fifth grade sounds younger than I would expect. I was reading King when I was in Middle School and a few of my teachers tried desperately to get me to stop. If I'd been in 5th grade they'd probably have just taken the books from me.

Congratulations, saiyris (or sai Yris? That's got a cool look to it.). There's nothing like the thrill of writing. Unless it's the thrill of reading a new SK book. :0: Please do keep us posted on how it's going. We're rooting for you, sai!
