This was the first scary movie I let my kids watch. It was their introduction to the "horror film" genre. It scared them witless. And I enjoyed every moment of it. They still talk about it and how they all snuck together into one bedroom after everyone was in bed to sleep together because they were scared. My second oldest son kept telling himself that they were on the second storey so nothing could reach them anyway. But he still slept with all the others in one bedroom. It wouldn't scare them now, but it sure did then.

I was lucky enough to find this movie crop up on the cable channels, just a short time after I started getting into all things SK. I couldn't believe that Corey Haim was in it. And the guy who plays the sheriff, and the uncle, and the preacher man! I loved the guy who plays the priest, I recently saw him while watching Twin Peaks; I was really impressed by the gravity he brings to the part. There's a sequence were he's closing in on Haim's character, trapped on a closed out bridge, and he projects his dialogue in quite an amazing way (maybe sound editing had to do with it a little, but there's still a lot of presence from the actor).

I had Silver Bullet in the watching cue alongside another old werewolf movie called The Howling, so I've had a fun mini werewolf film festival all to myself. Oddly enough, some of those decades earlier special effects are more unnerving than I think a computer-generated transformation would be; I can't explain, but the older effects are somehow more frightening.

While I like the movie a lot, it's hard to watch because of the young Corey Haim in the lead role. Sad that he passed away without over coming his demons from his youth. The priest is played by Everett McGill (Twin Peaks Ed Hurley) and he does have an amazing voice! I got to see this at a sneak peak filming in Seattle and afterwards we were all given forms to fill out with questions such as:
Why did you like the movie?
What didn't you like?
Did you like the ending?
Did you come to see this movie because-
A) Stephen King wrote it?
B) It has werewolves?
Etc., etc.
I still have one of those forms in my goodie box in the closet.

I discovered this story/film pretty late too, not until like 6 years ago. I can see how I missed the book, while I'd heard of it long before I had never (and still haven't) seen a physical copy in a book store. I wound up reading it digitally. But as a child of the 80's and a horror fan with a particular love for that decade I'm surprised I never even found out about the movie until my 30s. It would have been right up my alley but somehow it slipped under my radar growing up. I hadn't even heard of it at the time I read the story, I think I was looking at the Wikipedia article about the story after I read it and it mentioned the film. I thought it did a very good job with the story, which when I read it (the parts with Marty at least) seemed like an 80s movie just waiting to be filmed. Even though they set it in the 70s for some reason. And it does have an odd shifting tone that's goofy one minute and very dramatic a few minutes later, but overall it's a good adaptation and fun movie.

Busey was fantastic as the uncle but the dude seems like he was born to play an all-out psychotic King villain. He'd make a good Ed Deepneau, smooth talking and charming one second and a total nut the next.

Just flicking through TV listings late last night and noticed Silver Bullet was being shown on Horror Channel. Decided to save it to my planner as I had just been talking to my partner about it the other day! She's never seen it and I've not seen it in years but I remember enjoying it back then.
