I'm curious: why did King write this column? I don't remember reading too many of them or what they were about, but I recall enjoying his opinions and essays.

When I ask why he wrote them, I mean to say were they just purely for fun or was there some promotional angle involved? I very much doubt he was paid a lot for them (although correct me if I am wrong on that, certainly). Was it a way to get free advertising when a book was published? Was the gig a favor to a friend over at the magazine?

If he did them for fun, why not continue writing little blog posts here on the site? I think we all wouldn't mind that. And how many columns did he produce?

It sounded like something that would be fun at the time and he enjoys trying new things. It wasn't for the purpose of promoting one of his projects. They did approach him but he didn't know anyone there before writing the columns. He stopped doing them because he decided it was time to move on and his day job writing was taking up a lot of his time. In order to balance his professional life with his family life, some things had to go and that was one of them. I don't know the total number of columns he did as we didn't keep a running list while he was submitting them.
