I really liked this one too,for me,maybe because of having to work hard enough to raise blisters on the hands..and in the heat.Of course I can't imagine doing that under the conditions of the California/Nevada desert, where it is gets really hot..but I thought SK really caught the suffering of the main character and what he was willing to do in his search for justice..

I did wonder why he never put a hat on. ;-D

I was impressed with the technical detail of digging the hole (as Cody pointed out in the first post). SK doesn't usually get that technical and it had me wondering if Steve really did the math or if he was just making it up. ;-D After I finished, I read the notes and brother Dave impressed the hell out of me.

I thought that Arc of descent was interesting too :)

I also wondered why Robinson didn't wear a hat lol

The Cask of Amontillado sprang to mind for me, too. A lot of similarities and I think they were purposeful. I grew up in Vegas so I am very familiar with the area. SK did a great job of setting and place. The story is paced well - you never feel rushed or like it's being dragged out. Ghost story? Mayhap. I guess that's up to us.

I did pick up an unusual mistake. When the protagonist tunes into the radio, he tunes in to an impossibility. There is no WKXR in Vegas, nor could there ever be. Radio and TV station call letters west of the Mississippi River start with a K, not a W. A rare flub from Uncle Stevie. ;)

I have used a jackhammer before. In my much younger days I had a job at a company that put in gas station equipment (new tanks and pumps and more). I used to have to break concrete quite often. So my favorite line in this story is:

"My arms felt like a tuning fork gone mad"

That's exactly what your arms feel like after a couple of hours with a jackhammer.
