26. Phantasm

Two brothers investigate a mysterious mortuary where the bodies are disappearing, and clash with the Tall Man (and his minions) who's behind it all. Proof that a small independent film with a low budget can still become a horror classic. I love the strangeness of this movie, the unpredictability, and the way that the plot just keeps moving ahead. Yeah, it's pretty dated, but this was 1979 so give it some leeway. So many iconic moments, especially the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), the weaponized silver ball that is never explained (at least in this first installment), and of course that crazy scene near the end in that white room. This is becoming one of my most re-watched horror films of all time, and it's always a treat to introduce it to someone who has never seen it before. Bob says check it out!

5 out of 5 stars.

I love Phantasm. Every year, I try to find this one to watch, and every year I fail.
Do you own a copy? If so, where did you find it, and is it priced entirely out of my league?

I hope she liked it, it is such a great Movie

She did, very much! It was very fun watching things like this with her for her first viewing!

My final two movies. Only made it to 24 this year.

23) The Haunting of Marsten Manor (2007) FTV – I’ll be honest. I picked this one because of the Marsten name. It was bad. Acting was bad. Characters were annoying. At the end, it got preachy. The only thing going for it was the concept which saved it from a 1 star. I pick at least one stinker each year. Just took me a little longer into the game this year. – 1.5/5

24) Christine (1983) – It has been a while since I had watched this one. It is a good adaptation and Keith Gordon is a perfect choice for Arnie, however I had recently read the book and the movie changes the flow so much that I found it distracting. Things happen out of order (I get it, had to keep the movie short) that make less sense because of the order. Still a very good movie! – 4/5

Thanks, Feef for hosting us again! Love reading all of the reviews and getting new ideas for next year!! (((fushingfeef)))

Best New Entry: I would also agree with Haunting of Hill House and I'd throw in Castlerock
Best New Film: Evolucion -- very odd foreign entry, but of the new stuff, it was the most interesting to me
Biggest Surprise: Night Watch because it had Elizabeth Taylor. That surprised me.
Biggest Let-Down: Most of my list. Too many to single out one.
Best Classic: Vault of Horror

Thank you once again FF for leading the trooops. Always a fun time!

I agree - thanks to Bob for doing this for us - I only got up to 24 films (hey do1you9love? - we're tied!) but I've been busier than usual this October.

Just watched Darkman again - it was quite cute, and I liked the over the top acting of Liam Neeson - it seemed appropriate since it was based on a comic book.

I never finished my list! I did manage to get 31.

30. Halloween 1978
31. Halloween II 1981

I started another Hitchcock movie and also Halloween IV but did not get them finished until after Halloween so not counting them.

Thank you fushingfeef! And everyone who played along. Fun as always!
I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not but we did watch "The Shape of Water" - I never really thought of it as a horror movie until it was included in Eli Roth's History of Horror.

You did better than me - I only got 24 (or 25 if we include "The Shape of Water")

I didn't finish my list either, CAT......it was a weird time at work, and I wasn't able to be online when the board was open. I did watch around 35 movies, most of them new for me, except for the final handful.....I have several standards that I watch each year, and I always save 'Salem's Lot for Halloween night.

Thanks for hosting, fushingfeef! I always enjoy the posts and seeing what everyone watched.

When I was a kid I saw Trilogy of Terror (Karen Black) and I never forgot that Zuni doll! It scared me! ;;D Later I saw Burnt Offerings and it was creepy. Those movies were my start of enjoying horror movies. Ms. Black was one of the original scream queens.
Yes!! That little doll.... My Mom and I watched that and it stayed with both of us. We gave the sofa a wide berth.

What? What? It's a joke. I'm sure they are both lovely people. They just happen to look alike.
