Dear Editor—
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O'Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.

We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

That's the attitude I try to keep.

I posted this last year but just wanted to say it again:

First, I would just really like to encourage all of you --

If someone says Merry Christmas! to you, respond in kind and add a big smile.

If someone says Happy Hanukkah! to you, respond in kind and add a big smile.

If someone wishes you Happy Holidays, Season Greetings, Happy Kwanzaa, Joyous Festivus for the Rest of Us, respond in kind and add a big smile.

Is it really, really going to hurt you to just smile and say, "Same to you!" whether you celebrate that particular holiday or not? Is it going to wound you to your very core?

The sentiment that is said to you is said with no maliciousness and only with joy and good wishes for the season. Just accept them. Please?

I do all this although I haven't heard the Festivus one yet . And if someone says Bah Humbug I respond in kind and add a big smile. :)

I am constantly saying Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to my customers at the part-time job. The other evening after hearing me a manager came over and said I might want to just stick to saying Thank You so as not to offend anyone. I told him the customers I say it to are buying Christmas items so it would make no sense for them to be offended. And I said I wouldn’t stop doing it regardless of the consequences. He just walked away from me. I think I still have a job… we’ll see this evening.

I went to the store today and the cashier went above and beyond to help me get some good coupons and savings. I saved 15 bucks because of her. She told me exactly what I needed to do to get that, took her 3 seconds to tell me and 5 seconds for me to do it.

At the end of our transaction, I said to her, "thank you for your time today and thank you for the great customer service." She looked at me so surprised and said, "thank you for saying that." I said, "you were great!" and she said, "thanks for shopping with us today, GOD BLESS."

Now, my first thought was, holy cow, please let no one complain (because the line was long and she took the time to deal with me) and she had the nerve to say God Bless.

I just smiled and wished her the same.

I don't think I burst into flames.

And even those who(m) say Bah Humbug appreciate the return in kind- It might be the only greeting they will receive this year.

The Grinch's heart is growing!!:love_heart:
Tuesday I had a woman with two young children looking to get some Christmas stuff. But she was reluctant to get anything because of the cost. I told her to hold off and come back today because all the Christmas items were going on sale at 50% off. I think I might have actually felt my heart beat for once... Nah, it was probably just indigestion. Any sale is better than no sale, right? ;) :)

I am going to make you find the "Magic of the Season" no matter what!!!!!:):onthego:
Luckily the season will soon be over. Started online Christmas shopping for the wife today. So many things wouldn’t be coming until after Christmas. I did pick the ones (which was nearly all of them) that said will be delivered by December 26, though. Taking my chances. Hey, it’s the thought that counts is what people tell me. :)
