I went to Kmart as a last resort. I probably haven't walked in one in about 5 years, and my local Kmart is (wait for it Moderator, 5 minutes away).

I will speak only to my local Kmart, not anyone else's.

Our Kmart was filthy. So dirty and it smelled horrible. It's too bad ours wasn't kept nicer because it was in a great location.

The ones around here survived for a while because they let you do layaway all year long on items, but eventually all the Kmarts here were crushed under the boot of Wal-Mart as this is Wal-Mart's home territory and they don't play nice with other retailers. On the rare occasions I went there, the store always seemed deserted and poorly lit. There always seemed to be minimal employees working in the store.

I remember Montgomery Wards and they were awesome for tools. They went the way of the Kmart and Sears.
Growing up it was the local Grants department store. If you wanted tools or appliances you took the 30 minute trek to Two Guys. My jigsaw power tool I bought in 1975 from Two Guys finally died two years ago.

Interesting how it was Sears and Kmart who put the smaller local shops out of business, and now online Amazon and Walmart with their brick and mortar and good internet business are putting Sears and Kmart out of business.
