I could elaborate on the whole "magical negro" criticism that King has occasionally received about characters like Abigail Freemantle, John Coffey, Ayana, etc. All healers who are there to help the "white folk" or die for them all together. I think that is an unfair criticism and I won't go any further with it since the hour groweth late, but I do think it is interesting...the whole concept, I mean. Maybe a discussion for a later time.

Anyway, we've been at it over an hour. Thank you all for coming and giving us food for thought and plenty to ponder. I hope to see you next Tuesday, same time, for our discussion of The Long Walk which turned forty this month. See you then!

osnafrank and others, please add your comments when you get the opportunity.

Alison finished the book yesterday. She told me yesterday morning she was hoping that Paul and company would figure out how to save John. After she read through the execution, she brought the book out and said she was done. Wasn't going to finish it. She cried.

:biggrin2: I know it is not funny. But it is!

She picked the book back up again and finished by dinner. She cried again at the end, over Mr Jingles and Paul's wife.

She really enjoyed the book, even though it caused her emotional distress. ;) She is good and hooked!! :D

She's a full fledged Constant Reader now. Cried over the loss of a fav character, and cried again at an ending. Get your tissue boxes ready-- SK has a way of pulling all those heart strings!!

I told her that very thing about being a Constant Reader! She hasn't read one yet where SK uses that term, so I had to explain it to her. (And told her to never skip reading an introduction or afterword because he speaks directly to you!) She liked that idea a lot. :)

Hehheh...I can't help smiling myself. That's cute. Give her a month or two and she'll be biting her teeth on the horror stuff...then she'll be asking to sleep with you, LOL. Didn't she already read The Eyes of the Dragon?

Yep, she has read Eyes of the Dragon, Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, 'Salem's Lot and The Green Mile, now. So she has dipped into the horror stuff a little, with 'Salem's Lot. She gravitates towards horror anyway, she has scores of YA horror books. She loves scary stuff!

Would the Talisman be a good next read for her?

I recall that now . Old age on my part!!
How about The Stand, or an intro to detective- Mr. Mercedes?
I forgot too! And I just remembered she has read The Shining, as well. She is going to have to start keeping track for me. Haha! I think she has earned free range on the bookshelves. She can pick. She wants to read IT. Not sure if she will dive into another yet, she has a stack of books she wants to read before school starts.

Hey, Wolf! Hope you snagged you some cornbread, LOL. Keep that remote in hand, and don't change the channel. :)
Cornbread was AWESOME, thankee. ( I did bring Jalapenos to go with it)
Really enjoyed reading all of the posts right along with all of you!
Sorry I couldn't contribute at thetime, but I think I've said enough in other threads.

By the way, like the 'new armor' Doc! Red suits you too.

DId you notice I changed my signature? In the book, Arnie actually says, "Oh-oh, watch what you call my car. She's sensitive."
